23 Employers Share Job Applicant Deal-Breakers

9. Failing The Drug Test

As I’ve learned a few times, don’t fail the drug test.

Oops.

10. Blatantly Giving Up

I employ roughly 50 web developers for a major corporation and spend a considerable amount of time interviewing.

For me, nothing is an instant disqualification (within reason); everything is shades of gray. That being said, the thing I most hate to see is a person just give up on a question or problem. Shut down. Psych themselves out. I have seen some pretty bad tailspins from smart people who completely defeat themselves under pressure. Have confidence in yourself and stay calm. You don’t have to nail everything, but if you collapse every time you face something you don’t know, that’s what’s going to make me not hire you.

11. Lying

If you list yourself as an “expert” in something on your resume I’m going to ask you about it. Don’t lie about shit you can’t do.

Also, you don’t type as quietly as you think. I can hear you googling.

12. Being Fat, Apparently

My mom told me about this dude she interviewed yesterday. He came into the office and he was so fat that his shirt couldn’t cover his stomach all the way. He also sweat on his shoulders. So that, I guess.

13. Tattoos

Visible tattoos. Sorry but I work in a professional environment and tattoos don’t convey a professional image in most offices.
