It’s Time To Let Him Go

Etienne Boulanger

You keep waiting for him to come back to you. You keep wishing, night after night that he’ll change his mind and realize that his life is incomplete without you. That his heart doesn’t beat the same if you’re not within his reach. You keep telling yourself over and over to be more patient, and still hold on to the thought of him.

You still believe that there’s a possibility for both of you to re-make the past, bring back the good old days, and give birth to a fresh, new relationship. You still hope for him to call you when he accidentally sees your name in his contact lists, or send you a message when your photographs pop up on his newsfeed, or visit you in your place when he’s just around the corner. You still think of him every now and then.

You still remember the way he made you feel, the way he woke up every molecule of your body that was sleeping before he came, the way he made your heart come to life. You still crave for the smell of his skin, for the spaces in his fingers where yours fit perfectly, for his strong, muscular chest that used to make you feel at home.

You still miss him, even if he’s no longer yours.

But you forget to notice that he’s happy in his life right now. He’s no longer the guy you used to know. Because he has already changed. He has grown matured, his goals have shifted, and his world has grown bigger.

He is moving forward in his life. And maybe it’s time that you do too.

It’s time to finally settle everything that you had with him in the past, lock your memories with him in a drawer somewhere, throw away whatever residual feelings that you have for him, and move on.

Now is the time for you to feel the pain of your lost love, and let yourself cry until there’s no more tears left to shed. Right now is the perfect moment to grieve, to let your emotions speak for you, to be alone as you figure where you’re going to head next. Now is the time to grab your demons by the horn, and take them down, so you don’t have to deal with them anymore.

Letting him go is like twisting the knives inside your chest deeper and deeper. But you have to do it. You have to endure the pain so you can eventually set yourself free.

He is just one of the many persons you’re going to let go during your time here on earth. And you’re going to get over him. Maybe not now, but one day you will.

Open your palm and let him go. Watch him fly away and blossom out of your hand. It’s going to hurt just seeing how good he’s doing without you, but you’re going to learn to be happy for him too.

You’re going to be someone great in this world without him beside you.

It’s time to create your own story completely unique from the one that didn’t work out. You can begin changing your life anytime. You can loosen your grip to the things that you’re holding dearly, let them fall to the ground, and live the kind of life that’s free from so much heaviness.

Letting him go is all up to you. The passenger is your heart and you’re the driver who gets to decide where to bring it. You get to control how fast or slow you want to deliver it to its final destination. You get to choose whether you want it to move backwards or move forward with you.

You deserve to grin widely without feeling like something is holding you back. You deserve to take credit of all your successes in life and know that you can reach the highest peak of your mountain even without guidance from someone special.

You deserve to fall in love with life again and appreciate how beautiful it is.

You are going to be okay on your own. Your heart is going to beat just fine. And your world is going to shine even brighter. So let him go. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
