I agree with so many of the qualities of this list! I just wanted to highlight just a few and share with you how they relate to many different aspects of my life and beliefs…

#19) Be the girl who sees the best in people, but does not ignore the worst — This sums up my feelings about Brad pretty accurately. He and I are aware of each other’s flaws, and we’ve agreed to support each other in overcoming them. He has so many incredible qualities, and to him, it seems like I am one of the few people in his life that see them.

    # 25) Be the realistic girl; the one who has reasonable standards and doesn’t compromise for them. — In undergrad, I had straight A’s. Before medical school, I made the decision to not let grades determine my happiness or success anymore. So I’ve become complacent with getting B’s. My new goal has become scoring at or above average in comparison to my classmates. Those are my new, reasonable standards, and I won’t let anything or anyone distract me from achieving this goal. I have an exam coming up soon. As much as I want to hang out with Brad, unfortunately, he’s not going to get near as much attention as he has been over the next couple of weeks.

#6,16) Be the girl who refuses to let a man dull the sparkle in her eyes. Be the girl who is smart enough to know when it’s time to let something or someone go. — So this is something I learned only recently. For at least a year, I had a gut feeling (it was almost subconscious) that I didn’t want to be with my ex forever. It took me months and then cheating on him one night to finally have the courage to leave him. It was one of the best decisions of my life, and I wish I had made it sooner.

#5,23,39) Be the girl who is willing to take risks. Be the girl who can experiment and try new things without losing sight of her values. Be the girl who is willing to get her hands a little dirty. Be the girl who gives other the benefit of the doubt. — These are incredibly relevant to something that happened recently. We went to one of Brad’s friends apartments the other night to hang out. He warned me that these guys are “thugs.” I grew up in this environment, and as ignorant as it sounds, I love meeting people from different walks of life. I’m not the type to get scared easily, and I can handle my own. But, when we pulled into this apartment complex and there were four police cars with lights on outside the neighbor’s building, I was a little nervous! I was already asking myself, “What the heck are you doing here!?”, but I continued to walk with Brad toward his friend’s apartment because I wanted to prove to him that I didn’t mind hanging out with his friends – I truly did want to meet them! The apartment wreaked of marijuana, but was surprisingly well kept. We hung out for a while with his friend and another guy I had never met before. We drank Hennessy (not kidding, I had a small glass on the rocks), and listened to rap or instrumentals while they “freestyled.” It was incredibly entertaining to see these “thugs” make fun of each other and Brad, who isn’t ashamed to try his best at “battling,” even though he looks like a kid from the suburbs in his red shorts and loafers. A while later, his friend asked us to take him to a bar down the street so he could deliver a small amount of bud. I wasn’t surprised at all this guy was a drug dealer. Brad said no because he had been drinking too much and he didn’t want me to be put in that position. I agreed with him at first, but then the guy started being really rude to Brad. He was trashed so I didn’t really want him and Brad to get into it over something so insignificant. So, I told him if he rolled a blunt for himself and Brad (this guy’s known to be stingy about smoking people out), that I would drive him down the street so he could take care of his business. I was perfectly fine to drive and I knew that I couldn’t get in trouble if a passenger in my vehicle had drugs in their possession. While he was inside making his deal, Brad told me that he was actually dealing coke, and that I should have trusted him when he told his friend that we couldn’t drive him. I was just trying to be reasonable and avoid looking like the girl with a stick in her ass. Once again, Brad reminded me that my innocence and good girl nature is one of his favorite things about me. So, after we got back to the apartment, I said to Brad’s friend, “Look, now you know I’m a nice person. So please respect me enough to never put me in that position again.” He knew Brad had told me the truth in that moment. I gave him benefit of the doubt and was willing to take a risk, but in the end I stood up for myself and my values.
