Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, and Emma Mackey in Barbie (2023)

Was ‘Barbie’ Robbed at the Golden Globes? Disgruntled Fans Take to X (Twitter)

Barbie was arguably the most talked about film of 2023 (alongside Oppenheimer) from ingenious director Greta Gerwig starring a perfectly-cast Margot Robbie, a loveable and forlorn ditz in Ryan Gosling, a relatable and warm America Ferrera, funnyman Will Ferrell, and laugh-out-loud lady Kate McKinnon. Yet, aside from snagging the award for Cinematic Box Office Achievement (one of two new categories at this year’s ceremony), the film virtually struck out.

The film lost Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category to Poor Things and Margot Robbie lost out to Emma Stone for the latter’s performance in the aforementioned comedic horror from director Yorgos Lanthimos. While Poor Things received critical acclaim for its exhilarating and imaginative premise — a feminist twist on the Frankenstein tale — it didn’t exactly possess Barbie’s broad appeal. The turnout may speak to the tendencies often associated with entertainment critics (who are known to dismiss mass appeal in favor of niche distinction): 300 of whom voted on the honors as part of a new organization developed following the HPFA’s ethics and diversity scandal.

Gerwig and husband/collaborator Noah Baumbach also lost out in the screenplay category to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari who penned Anatomy of a Fall. Barbie fans quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) in response to the Golden Globe awards, and here’s what they had to say…

‘Barbie’ got robbed!

Do we smell homophobia?

Emma Stone is fantastic, but…

Gerwig deserved better

Is sexism to blame?
