You Are Allowed To Be Upset That You Are Still Single

You are allowed to wish that you had someone sending you good morning texts. You are allowed to wish that you had someone to kiss goodnight.

You keep hearing that you don’t need another person to be happy, that relationships aren’t everything, that you should learn to love yourself — and that is the truth — but that doesn’t mean you have to enjoy every second of the single life. That doesn’t mean you aren’t entitled to feel sad or disappointed or lonely at times.

You are allowed to wish that you had someone sending you good morning texts. You are allowed to wish that you had someone to snuggle with on rainy afternoons. You are allowed to wish that you had someone to kiss goodnight.

You are allowed to wish that you had someone to brag about to your friends when you meet up for brunch. You are allowed to wish that you had someone to spend the weekends with when all of those friends are busy. You are allowed to wish that you could go on double dates instead of getting stuck as the third wheel again and again.

You are allowed to see cute couples kissing on movie screens or holding hands on social media and wish that you had someone to do those things with too. You are allowed to get jealous when your friend celebrates another anniversary with her boyfriend and you are allowed to get annoyed when she complains about that boyfriend, because you wish you were in her shoes.

You are allowed to wish that you had someone who would kiss you on the neck. Someone who would hug you from behind. Someone who would lift you in their arms and carry you into the bedroom.

You are allowed to wish you had better news to tell your grandmother when she asks about whether you are seeing anyone new. You are allowed to wish you had someone to take home to meet your family and celebrate the holidays alongside. You are allowed to wish that you weren’t the only person who showed up without a date.

You are allowed to daydream about falling in love. You are allowed to talk about how you want to get married and have children one day. You are allowed to get excited when you meet someone special because they might be the person you have been looking for all this time.

You are allowed to wish that you could leave the single life behind forever. That you could delete all of your dating apps and stop analyzing the mixed signals that never stop coming. That you could finally settle down with the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with instead of going on failed first dates with strangers you are never going to see again.

You are allowed to wish things were different sometimes.

You are allowed to be upset that you are still single. You are allowed to have those type of feelings, even though you are strong and independent. Even though deep down you know you are okay alone. Even though you know in your heart there is nothing wrong with being single. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
