Netflix Just Gave Us Our First Look At The Newest Cast Member Of The Live Action ‘One Piece’

By

This year’s Netflix Tudum marked the first live stream directly from the Netflix platform for the fan-focused event, and the One Piece fandom in particular got plenty of TLC and screen time. As the streaming giant hyped up the upcoming second season of it’s live action adaptation of the world’s best-selling manga and beloved anime series, we got our first look at the newest member of the Straw Hat Pirate crew.

Meet the live action Tony Tony Chopper:

Brought to life by the voice and motion-capture of Guardians of the Galaxy actress Mikaela Hoover, Tony Tony Chopper, alias “Cotton Candy Lover”, is a central character in the One Piece universe, a loveable reindeer doctor who gets flustered by compliments, and often (unhappily) confused for a Japanese racoon dog.

Manga creator Eiichiro Oda cited that the character’s backstory of being rejected by his herd and rescued by humans was intended to illustrate the strength of chosen family versus blood-relation. He’s also shared that if Tony Tony Chopper had a real world nationality, the ship’s doctor would be a Canadian. His special powers allow him to transform into a full-sized reindeer or a reindeer-human hybrid.

While we’re bummed we’ll have to wait until 2026 to see Tony Tony Chopper’s adventures with the rest of the crew, we’ll have to make due with the preview for now, and thankfully it’s packed with personality.
