Maeve Wiley Stans Are Getting The Summer Lesbian Drama Of Their Dreams Starring Emma Mackey
The queer community has claimed Maeve Wiley as our own since she first graced our screens in the British teen comedy Sex Education. It didn’t matter that she was the love interest of male protagonist, Otis Milburn, because we knew there was nothing “completely straight” about her obsession with classic literature.
So the news that, Emma Mackey, the actress who brought our favorite character to life, is starring in what might be this summer’s hottest lesbian drama, set in Spain no less? Hot Milk is exactly what we’re willing to drink in order to get a ticket.
Based on Deborah Levy’s novel of the same name, the film follows the journey of anthropology student Sofia and her mother Rose as they travel to a Spanish clinic seeking treatment for Rose’s paralysis, where Sofia begins an intense relationship with seamstress Ingrid. The trailer is loaded with mommy issues and hints of heavier themes. Reviews from the likes of The Independent describe the film as, “A slippery subversive coming of age tale.”
Directed by Rebecca Lenkiewiecz whose work on Disobedience sets a high bar and higher expectations for this latest queer full-length film, which made its debut at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. In theaters July 4th, some of us will be ditching the family barbecue and heading to the multiplex for a different kind of fireworks.
