This Underrated Work-Place Comedy Has Way More Chemistry Than ‘The Office’
If you loved the world of Dunder Mifflin, it’s time for you to meet Copito, a toilet paper company with as much disfunction as it has heart. El Secretario follows Emilio, a pizza delivery guy who returns to Colombia from the United States after discovering through social media that he is the father of a six-year old girl.
He becomes entangled in a smuggling scheme after accepting a plane ticket from a former client, who provides his airfare in exchange for an errand. Emilio is detained by customs when they discover the suitcase full of clothes he was transporting has a false bottom containing thousands of dollars in cash.
Plagued new with legal troubles, desperate for work, and needing to support his family, Emilio is hired by kind-hearted and beautiful executive, Antonia Fontalvo (played by Stephanie Cayo of Netflix’s Club de Cuervos), but in a misunderstanding discovers the role is for the company’s first male secretary.
Emilio must don the ultra-feminine company uniform, contend with a wild cast of co-workers, including Antonia’s unfaithful fiancé, VP Félix Segura, his incompetent half-brother and operations manager, Mario, and the company mascot and namesake, Félix’s dog, Copito. His hijinks range from navigating office politics, to gender norms, parenthood, and the incredible chemistry and power dynamics of his budding romance with Antonia.
With over 100 episodes, this series will give you that same sense of long-term commitment you loved with The Office, but with a lot more rhythm and hit tracks from Colombian artists like Bomba Estéreo. It’s a can’t miss for anyone who loves ridiculous comedy sprinkled with sweetness and sensitivity.
