Netflix Has The Funniest New Buddy Comedy Starring Keke Palmer and SZA
Keke Palmer is the masterclass on how to be a PR darling. When she lands a joke in an interview, it instantly becomes viral internet gold. She is unabashedly herself, never afraid to speak her mind, show a genuine level of enthusiasm, or admit when she doesn’t recognize a photograph of former VP, Dick Cheney.
And when she’s not being herself, she’s slipping effortlessly into a wide range of expertly crafted celebrity impressions, imitating everyone from Cynthia Erivo to Nicki Minaj, Angela Bassett, and Kamala Harris, and she’s ballsy enough to do it to their faces. TikTok handle @rankingtiktok captures some of her best moments below:
So there’s nothing the world needed more than Ms. Palmer in a new full-length film where we could enjoy her comedic chops for more than a few brief moments. Throw in SZA as her co-star and Katt Williams in a supporting role, and really what more could you ask for? To stream it on Netflix? Well, One Of Them Days just dropped on the platform this week. You’re welcome.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton in her debut screenplay, One Of Them Days follows a hectic 24-ish hours in the lives of roommates Dreux and Alyssa, played by Palmer and SZA (whose legal name is Solána Imani Rowe).
Dreux is an astute waitress who knows the ins and outs of her restaurant like the back of her hand. She’s aspiring to climb the corporate ladder and has an interview scheduled for a franchise manager position that has the power to change her financial situation. In the meantime, she’s strapped for cash, and spurned by a hairdresser who left her only half-styled.
Roommate Alyssa is an aspiring artist with limited self-confidence. Her boyfriend, Keshawn, has invaded their apartment, leaving his shoe collection strewn across the shared space, wearing Dreux’s bathrobe, and never contributing financially to expenses.
Things take a turn for the worse when Dreux and Alyssa’s strict landlord, Uche, shows up threatening to evict the pair unless they pay by 6 p.m. that evening. Dreux confronts Alyssa, having given her the rent for that month, and Alyssa confesses that she entrusted the cash to Keshawn, who instead of giving it to Uche, used the money to fund his investment in a t-shirt scheme.
Thus begins the pair’s Odyssey across town to resolve this dilemma, trying everything from tracking down Keshawn to donating blood, seeking a pay day loan against the warnings of homeless savant, Lucky, played by Katt Williams, and taking on local bullies and gangsters.
Along the way Dreux’s job interview is sabotaged, straining her relationship with Alyssa, but assistance from neighbors like crush ‘Maniac’ and a new arrival posing a threat of apartment gentrification gives them one more shot at securing their home.
It’s a movie perfect for date night, girl’s night, family night with an older crowd, or simply laughing on the couch alone.
