You Don’t Owe Anyone A Reason When You Let Them Go

reason i let you go
Jonathan Daniels

You’re the person who’s on the other side of the story. The one who caused all the sleepless nights the other had gone through. The reason for all the emotional breakdowns that happen from time to time. You were the one who broke someone’s heart. Your name said numerous times by different people, followed by a string of awful adjectives that resembles you in their mind.
But there are things that they don’t know… because truth be told, what do they even know apart from the fact that you initiated the break up? Nada.

They have no idea that no matter how many times they point out how insensitive and heartless you had been towards the relationship you left, the decision you made was never a walk in the park. They are not experiencing the guilt that crawls into you and how it eats you up day by day. A vivid reminder of how you shattered someone’s faith by leaving that person behind.

You wish there was an easy way out, one where nobody gets hurt. But is that even possible? A broken heart that won’t hurt?

There are days when you hope you can take away the pain you’ve instilled. And yet, you just made a choice that you thought would be good for the both of you… a choice between being honest with yourself and constantly lying about how you really feel. What good would it do to drag it on longer? To save the scattered pieces of a relationship that can’t be put back again? They can judge you all they want, but you know for a fact that you tried to stay in love… you just can’t keep looking for what was no longer there.

You’re allowed to move on.

You deserve to move on as much as they tell the other person that someone better deserves to be with them.

If you don’t want to stay, you don’t have to. You can leave everything behind without the need to explain yourself. You can refuse to continue with the relationship, just like how a vegetarian would refuse to eat meat. You don’t have to force yourself to fall in love again with the same person. You don’t have to make it work just to keep the other person happy. You’re entitled to go after what you want and who you want to be with.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to your happiness… not someone else’s.

Heartbreak will always be a constant occurrence in one’s life. Inevitable and unforeseen. And while most would empathize with the one who got left behind, walking away from a ticking bomb will always be the best decision anyone could ever make. When reality hits you hard… you would rather leave intact and whole, than damaged beyond repair.

People may find you selfish… people will find you selfish.

But honestly, aren’t we all a little selfish when it comes to love?

This time, you owe it to yourself to move forward and be genuinely in love. Be in that relationship you have always wanted. The one that does not make you doubt the love, nor yourself.

Strip yourself off with all the blame and stop thinking about how they see you. Do not let yourself be impacted by how horrible they think you are. Life will never be fair when love is involved. Some people may not realize this yet, but they eventually will. Follow what your heart desires… or you’ll never find contentment at all.

It’s okay to walk away, you’re allowed to walk away. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
