Addiction and addiction recovery are topics I’m very passionate about. In losing people to addiction, in watching my hometown fight against drug-related crime, death, and fear, and in seeing people I care about struggle with drug and alcohol use, I feel that it’s so important to be open about these issues and how they affect us.

I’ve teamed up with Rehabs.com and Recovery.org to share some inspiring addiction quotes to shed light and bring strength to those in recovery, or supporting family members/friends in recovery.

Hopefully when we keep the conversation open, as well as inspire those who are in in their lowest moments, we can begin to change the way our lives and the lives of people we love are shaped by drugs and alcohol.

1. “It won’t be like this forever.”

Whether you are struggling personally, or watching helplessly as a loved one fights his or her battle, take comfort in these words: It won’t be like this forever. You are strong. You are resilient. You are finding a way to fight, every single day.

You are not weak, but even if you feel that you are, realize that every morning you wake up and continue forward, you are proving to yourself and the world that you will make it through. It won’t always be this hard. You just have to take one day, one hour, one second at a time.

2. “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.”

This quote by Robert Schuller is one that never ceases to inspire. Let his words remind you that every day of sobriety, every drink or substance you say ‘no’ to, every temptation you resist is only building you. Awful moments won’t last, but you will.

3. “You can, and will, overcome.”

Tangie B., a recovering addict, shares this powerful quote: “Knowing what I lost and knowing where it led me gives me strength from addiction…My thoughts of getting high vanish when I think of not having my grandkids in my life now. I lost a 21-year-old daughter to the same thing I fight every day. My grandkids are my world now.”

To her, knowing where she’s been and how she’s fought through as well as what she has now, inspires her to continue to battle in the future.

3. “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson sheds light on addiction with these powerful words. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve gone through, who you are is who you choose to be.

4. “Let go, and let God.”

Sometimes you will feel completely powerless, whether you’re trying to fight through temptation or unable to rescue a loved one from their addiction. Sometimes you can do all that you can and it will seem useless. But remember that God is in control. Letting Him take over, letting Him fight, letting Him be a source of energy and strength when you have none is invaluable. Allow Him go to battle for you, and trust that He is with you every step of the way.

5. “No matter what the situation is, remind yourself ‘I have a choice.’”

This quote by Deepak Chopra is so important. Despite how powerless you may feel, you have a choice. Your next step. Your next action. Your next ‘no’ to an offer of something you can’t have.

Sometimes you’re going to feel weak, but remember that you do have control over what you allow into your life. You are powerful.

6. “You’re stronger than you think.”

Recovering addict, Natalie Baker, shares this powerful quote: “A lot of us think there’s no way we’ll ever be able to give up drugs or alcohol, but we underestimate the strength within ourselves. Sure, the easier route may be to give up and go back to our old ways, but we are fully capable of beating this disease once and for all. All it takes is focus, determination, and hard work.”

7. “You’re worth it.”

Above all else, remember that you are worthy. You are worth love. You are worth respect. You are worth new beginnings, hope, and change. And you are also capable of those things. See yourself as a person of value. See yourself as a person who is able to be sober, and believe in that, no matter what obstacles are thrown in your path.

You deserve a life of freedom, peace, health and happiness.
