Rise Above: Turning Negative Social Media Experiences Into Positives

In life, it’s incredibly easy to focus on the negative. We all tend to focus on what we are bad at it, instead of what we are great at. And we tend to focus on what we don’t have, instead of all that we do. But just like Brita is doing, it’s time for us all to filter out the negative and the toxic experiences we’ve been having, into something that is actually beneficial to our hearts, bodies, and minds.

Social media – we all are obsessed with it. Whether we are checking our Instagram every few minutes to see how many likes we are getting, or checking to see how many people have commented on our brilliant Facebook status, it is something that we all do. Whether we like to admit it or not.

Social media has become a fantastic way for people all over the world to communicate with one another. And it has become a wonderful way for people of all ages, races, religions and political parties to discuss, to connect, and to share with one another.

But just as it has become an opportunity for people to spread positivity, it also has become a place of hate and jealousy.

We have all received hate mail. We all have received comments that immediately made our self-esteem drop. We all find ourselves deleting wonderful memories just because the picture didn’t get more than 50 likes. And we all find ourselves late at night comparing and contrasting our bodies, our opinions, and our lives with everyone else’s.

But you know what? This has to stop. We need to stop letting social media be the cause of our self-confidence to be at an all time low. We need to stop letting social media be the reason we hate ourselves at the darkest of hours. We need to turn these negative experiences and our negative mindsets into something positive. We need to turn social media into something that empowers us, instead of something that brings us down.

Look at social media as a scrapbook of your life that you can look back on in years to come. Look at social media as a memory box, as an incredible time machine that can export you back to wonderful experiences and memories.

Let social media bring you closer together with people that are different from you, instead of tearing you apart. Make it a place of empowerment, a place of beauty and positivity. Let social media in your mind, be a tool of self-esteem instead of a tool of self-pity.

At the end of the day, social media is not life. And social media should never be a reason to hate yourself, or a reason to hate your world. Social media is just a tiny part of your beautiful and magical life.

So don’t let something like Facebook or Instagram destroy the way you look at yourself. And don’t let something like Twitter or Tumblr, destroy the beauty of your world.

Turn your negative experiences into experiences that shape you and make you better. And instead of letting social media filter out everything that is good in your life, let it filter out your negative thoughts and mindset. And let your true self shine through. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
