5 Movies Worth Seeing in Theaters This Week: April 1 — April 7
By Josh Lezmi
Some movies are meant to be seen on the big screen — whether for the top-notch graphics featuring explosions and larger-than-life beasts or the thrill of simultaneously screaming in terror during an unexpected jump scare. So, if you’re looking to head to the theater this week, these are the films to put on your watch list.
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ | Playing Now
When an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, the Ghostbusters — the classics and the contemporaries — must unite to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age that threatens to freeze everyone to death using their greatest fears. The sci-fi spectacle, from director and writer Gil Kenan stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd. While critics deemed the cast “overcrowded” and the story weak on all but nostalgia, fans have shared their love for the movie’s classic charm and action-packed narrative.
‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ | Playing Now
The cultural juggernauts and ancient titans, Kong and Godzilla, come head-to-head in this epic battle as humans work to discover their origins and connections to the various mysteries surrounding Skull Island. The movie may not have much to offer in terms of emotional depth and narrative complexity, but it’s a smash-and-bash hoot with big ole giants tearing up the city. You cannot watch this on your 40-inch TV screen. If you’re a fan of non-stop destruction and top-notch CGI, Godzilla x Kong is a theatrical must.
‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ | Playing Now
This one’s an event for the whole family with a sweet and simple story that will keep the kiddos (and their folks) engaged. It’s been nearly a decade since we last saw Po on the screen, and now he has been tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, so he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior to take his previous position. There’s just one catch: a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm.
With Jack Black back in the driver’s seat, as well as Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Bryan Cranston, and James Hong lending their voice talents, the movie features a lovable stacked ensemble. And each voice, behind yet another cute and cuddly creature, only draws us into the humor-filled, loveable, and action-packed animated sequel.
‘Immaculate’ | Playing Now
Euphoria and Anyone But You fan-favorite Syndey Sweeney stars in this religious-themed horror movie as a nun who moves to the Italian countryside, where she is met with quite a warm welcome…initially. Her life takes a turn to the sinister when she discovers her new home harbors unspeakable secrets and horrors. Critics are calling it weird and timely, while celebrating Sweeney’s strong performance in an over-saturated genre that has grown stale over the years. If you like to scream alongside others, this is the pick for you (but keep the kid at home, please).
‘Monkey Man’ | Premieres April 5
Monkey Man from writer, director, and star Dev Patel (in his feature film directorial debut) follows a young man on a journey of vengeance, who is committed to taking down the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to victimize the powerless. The film also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Chappie), Pitobash (I Am Kalam, An Indian Tale), and Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai, Like Stars on Earth). Critics are hailing the film as a smart and stylish endeavor, yet no less gritty and violent piiece of mayhem.
