“I had pretty much always known I was different, but it wasn’t until I met Sam that I actually knew HOW. It was him who first dubbed me ‘Dead Things Mikey’. Seeing Goonies in theaters when we were like 14 had basically been our first date… The first time we kissed. Of course, being two young boys who grew up in the South, we knew what would happen if anyone saw us. But movie theaters were a pretty safe place to make out. Especially since we usually bought tickets for the least popular movie playing or the one that had been out the longest. Anything that would guarantee us an empty theater. Sam and I were always very careful but our plan had a fatal flaw in it that we hadn’t accounted for…”

Mikey went silent again, as if struggling to get the words out. Grace approached and placed her hand on his back. Mikey sighed and eventually said…

“It was our senior year of high school when Georgie Junior’s friend started working at the theater as a projectionist. He spotted us making out during Best of the Best and it wasn’t long before Georgie Senior found out… That next morning, as I was walking to school, Georgie Junior and one of his meathead buddies drove up and I guess I could see the murder in their eyes because I immediately took off running back to my house…”

Mikey turned and looked at me as he continued…
