The White Lotus

The beauty of the show lies in its patience, and Episode 5 is likely to be another masterclass in controlled suspense.

Okay, I know what you are thinking… Episode 5 of The White Lotus is going to be BIG. I mean, that would make sense, right? So much has been teased in the last few scenes of Episode 4. All my friends at this point are saying Episode 5 is going to be huge. My problem? I don’t buy it. I think we have one more slow burn episode left before things really blow up.

Spoilers ahead!

Let’s look at it this way. The White Lotus has never been a show that rushes toward its biggest moments. Instead, it layers tension, teasing out conflicts until they inevitably explode. With Episode 5 of Season 3 on the horizon, it’s easy to assume that major events will take center stage. However, most signs point to this episode serving as additional buildup rather than delivering the season’s most shocking moments.

Take a look back at previous seasons, The White Lotus follows a distinct pattern: the first few episodes introduce the characters and their dynamics, mid-season teases danger right in front of our faces, and the final stretch delivers chaos. Season 3 seems to be following this formula. Episode 4 ramped up tension, with missing weapons, growing conflicts, and the looming presence of danger. But history suggests Episode 5 won’t be the moment when everything unravels, rather, it will heighten the suspense even further.

Furthermore, Episode 5’s title, Full-Moon Party, suggests that much of the runtime will be dedicated to an extravagant and chaotic event. While that certainly opens the door for reckless behavior, it’s more likely that the party will serve as a backdrop for character tensions to reach their boiling point rather than an actual climactic moment. I mean, I feel like it would be too easy at this point for things to really hit the fan. Mike White is more clever than that.

One of the biggest setups heading into Episode 5 is the missing gun, which is now in the hands of Timothy Ratliff. While it’s tempting to assume this means an immediate violent act is imminent, The White Lotus is more about the slow reveal. Timothy’s possession of the weapon might not result in anything major just yet, especially because Gaitok confronts him. Timothy could spend the entire episode brooding, foreshadowing a later, more surprising use of the gun in Episodes 6, 7, or 8.

I also suspect that Episode 5 will be more about rising tensions than explosive actions. Jaclyn, Laurie, and Kate’s excursion with Valentin hints at temptation, betrayal, and shifting allegiances, but these developments might simmer for another episode or two before reaching their full consequences. Meanwhile, Belinda’s suspicions about Greg/Gary and Greg/Gary looking at photos of Belinda and her son could still be a slow burn rather than something that pays off next episode.

Look at Rick too! I mean I wouldn’t be surprised if we just get crumbs of his journey to Bangkok, with the episode ending when he comes face-to-face with the man who killed his father.

While the Full Moon Party setting makes it tempting to assume something huge will happen in Episode 5, The White Lotus rarely operates this way. Expect simmering tension, subtle foreshadowing, and more groundwork being laid for an inevitable explosion in the season’s final episodes.
