33 People Share Their ‘No Sleep’ Stories That You Should Never Read Before Bed

15. I heard a ghost singing while dog sitting

This happened my senior year of college, Christmas break 2006. I worked for a professor that asked me to house/dog sit for him while he was outta town to see the bowl game that we were in. He was gone for three days and had a huge piece of land in the middle of nowhere. I invited my gf at the time. He had horses and fishing and a gator to ride around on, etc etc.

so the first two nights went down with no incident, but the last night, his little foofy dog is having a fit. She keeps barking at the back door. At first we blow it off, but decide to lock the dog inside in case of a coyote or something. After awhile we start to get a little creeped out. I keep saying it’s probably an animal and we’ll be fine. My gf (not too bright) wants to go investigate to see what’s outside, so I lock the door behind her (hehe, just kidding). She goes outside and says she saw something small and grey (probably a coyote) and it ran off. So, just an animal, no worries. but by this time, we’re pretty spooked.

The dog now starts barking at the window on the other side of the house, we’re still trying to ignore it, but a little worried. We decide to get into bed… awkward silence… then I hear it….. it sounds like a young girl singing a soft, eerie lullaby. I don’t say anything, hoping that my mind is playing tricks on me. My girlfriend says, “Let’s get the fuck outta here.” I say “Why?” she says, “You didn’t hear that little girl singing?” “Ok, let’s get the fuck out.” And we got the fuck out. I even called someone to talk to me while we walked out to my car. Next morning, went to clean up the house and such.

Most scared I’ve ever been. Ever.

16. I heard the same exact noise on a loop

Out in the woods somewhere for retreat. Stayed up late chatting with some friends in the cabin… everyone else is sleeping in the other room, we were whispering.

At around 2:30am, there were some animal noises, like barking. It’s nothing new, we hear animals all the time since we’re in the woods. What I thought was weird was that it barked like a dog but then howled like a wolf. But whatever, I don’t know animals so it could have been how a coyote sounds for all I know. We kept talking.

Fifteen minutes later, I still couldn’t shake this really weird feeling from me. My friends were whispering and gossiping as normal so I just pretended nothing was wrong. Then suddenly I realized why I felt so odd. It was because the dog or whatever it was, was barking on loop. I kind of went silent as my friends started sharing some stories so it wouldn’t seem suspicious, and I listened and counted the barks.

The “loop” started with the same number of dog-like barks, a one second pause, and then the same series of howl-barks, with the same exact upturn to the same exact pitch at the end. And then there was an EXACT seven and a half second pause, before it started again. I listened to ten of these loops before I got distracted by the conversation. Every time I got a chance, I’d listen to the loop again. Same fucking thing.

It really weirded me out. Maybe some animal out there was actually doing this and I had no idea, but the fact that it had the exact variation in pitch, tone and volume, there was an exact seven and a half second pause in between each “loop” really freaked me out. Me and my friends went to sleep at around 3:00am and I was really tired by then. When the lights were out I just started feeling really scared so I stopped counting the loops and just tried to sleep.

17. My apartment complex was robbed

I was about 19 living with a roommate going to college while living in an apartment complex. Occasionally I get mild bouts of insomnia but nothing serious, usually just a delay in my bedtime of an extra 2 or 3 hours. One night I suddenly just can not sleep. Nothing will get me to relax and I eventually give up and just sit in the front room playing heavy rain all night as it had just come out a few days ago. The next day when I head off to work exhausted with 0 hours of sleep I got a text from my roommate:

“Dude the police are all over the apartment complex. Apparently 9 apartments including our downstairs neighbor were broken into last night WITH PEOPLE HOME SLEEPING. Some people even reported things being stolen from the rooms they were sleeping in.”

It hit me that had I not stayed up all night and left the light on in the front room I would have been robbed or worse.
