Stop Searching For Your Forever Person And Search For Your Perfect Career

Thought.is

Stop searching for your forever person — because you can’t control when or how you’re going to meet them. You can’t control whether you’ll discover your soulmate in your teens or your twenties or decades after.

But you can control which career path you follow. You can control how much effort you put toward achieving your dreams. You can control your future.

When it comes to choosing a career, that special thing you’re going to spend forty hours a week doing, pick something fun, something you actually enjoy. Something that you would still love to pursue, even if you weren’t getting paid to do it.

Pick something you’re proud of calling your career. Something that you’ll brag about every time you get the chance.

Because when you’re at a party and a stranger asks you what you do for a living, you shouldn’t ignore the question, say that the details are boring, that you don’t want to talk about work during your off hours. You should be excited to go on and on about your career, because you’re passionate about it, because it makes you happier than you’ve ever been.

Make sure you pick something that makes you a better person. That encourages you to work longer hours, to show up on time, to act as a responsible adult. Something that makes you feel like you’re actually good at something, like you’ve found meaning in life, like you finally have your shit together.

It sucks to count down the hours when you’re at work, to only wear an authentic smile during a Saturday or Sunday, to resent your boss for all your stress and your customers for making you lose sleep. It sucks to work a job you wish you could quit.

That’s why you should pick something that makes it easy for you to get up in the morning, because you’re excited to start your day. Something that makes you look forward to Mondays as much as the weekends. Something that doesn’t even feel like work, because you love it so much.

Pick something that makes you excited about your future. Something that you can imagine doing forever — even when you’re old and grey and everyone is encouraging you to just retire already. Something that you’re never going to want to give up, because it’s a part of you.

Your forever person is important, sure, but so is your career. You’re going to spend just as many hours working as you’re going to spend with your person so you better make the most of it. You better pick something that won’t make your days drag, that won’t make you wish you could curse your boss out and quit.

And if you’re one of the people who are lucky enough to land their dream job, be thankful every goddamn day. Because there are people who would kill to be in your position.

There are people who wish they had the means to follow their passion. That wish they were half as happy as you. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
