18 Emo Songs That All Dudes Secretly Love

Sometimes, us men go great lengths to deny that we’re able to feel feelings. The pent up repression varies by man, but those of us unable to fully express our compassion on the reg tend to have similar-sounding soft spots. Soft spots you can shed a tear to below:

1. Work – Jimmy Eat World

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC587OXtsAY&w=584&h=390]

Jimmy Eat World dominated the aughts like steroids dominated late 90’s baseball. We were all lured in by their power ballads, but the stayed for the more reflective stuff.

2. Soco Amaretto Lime – Brand New

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LE1Bd_wX1M&w=584&h=390]

Back in the olden days of 2006, when people made CDs and played them in their cars, this was a big one to cry over when realizing you were going off to college and your friends probably weren’t going to “get you” like the crew back home.

3. Ohio Is For Lovers – Hawthorne Heights

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUO-sRLotOI&w=584&h=390]

There’s a mashup of this and Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.” Beyond a gem.

4. Cute Without The “E” – Taking Back Sunday

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap0mqwvf7H0&w=584&h=390]

When you hear phrases like “this got me through middle school,” there’s a decent chance Taking Back Sunday is involved.

5. A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Touch Me – Fall Out Boy

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew6x6sHiFaw&w=584&h=390]

Fall Out Boy turned from a blip in the Chicago music scene to a worldwide sensation. Still a Spotify go-to.

6. Adam’s Song – Blink 182

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MRdtXWcgIw&w=584&h=390]

One of the saddest songs out there happens to also be the most profound. Get a group of guys drunk and put this on. They’ll know every word.

7.  Bruised – Jack’s Mannequin

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71wVs8xvabY&w=584&h=390]

Somewhat known fact: Bruised is on the soundtrack for the Snakes On A Plane.

8. Check Yes Juliet – We The Kings

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1R_txIuuio&w=584&h=390]

We The Kings rose to prominence in the late 2000’s. A natural evolution into lighter pop-punk, but definitely enough sentimentality to qualify here.

9. Soul Meets Body – Death Cab For Cutie

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEVS1KY-exY&w=584&h=390]

Death Cab is one of the few bands that have reached Death Cab status. Death Cab status is usually reserved for solo acts.  Examples include Kendrick, Dylan, and Britney.

10. Your Hand In Mine – Explosions in the Sky

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoI6HNP_A7c&w=584&h=390]

Friday Night Lights made this one a lot more “acceptable.” Not that we need to hide behind the veil of masculinity on this one–just phenomenal.

11. Until The Day I Die – Story Of The Year

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9WKZpC9UbU&w=584&h=390]

You might’ve had a “punk” friend who wore a lot of Etnies and Element clothing. He might’ve introduced you to this song on a snowboarding trip. Either that, or I’m just projecting.

12. Screaming Infidelities – Dashboard Confessional

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZtgoTQRH4c&w=584&h=390]

Close call between this and Hands Down. Though Hands Down probably draws recollection of that first love. Depending on how it ended, that song may no longer be loved.

13. So Contagious –  Acceptance

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S1P2Gl_RbE&w=584&h=390]

In a more innocent time, this crept dangerously high up on my iTunes most played.

14. Last Night – Motion City Soundtrack

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwdufCyQ7PM&w=584&h=390]

A band that totes should’ve been a bigger deal.

15. The Young And The Hopeless – Good Charlotte

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmW9Lv8FpV4&w=584&h=390]

Good Charlotte had their day, and their fare share of hits. This came off their biggest album, titled after this particular song. Not as much of a commercial hit, but most certainly an emotional one.

16. Dear Maria, Count Me In – All Time Low

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcNiKCmWdYE&w=584&h=390]

The Baltimore-based band burst onto the scene with a harder hitting brand of emo rock. Their uptempo tone has always skewed a bit more hopeful than morbid, making them quite the darling for angsty young males.

17. Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyP0DACgdgc&w=584&h=390]

No one ever said the transition from punk to hipster was gonna be an easy one. A nice coping mechanism.

18. With Me – Sum 41

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8z-qP34-1Y&w=584&h=390]

Gets me every time. Commence the ever-growing lump in the throat. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
