‘Law & Order: SVU’ Kicks Off Season 27 By Killing Off A Major Character

Dont worry! Detective Olivia Benson is safe—for now, but she was offered a new job in the Season 27 premiere!

But we did bid farewell to a major character, as this latest episode opened up with Captain Donald Cragen’s wake. We didn’t even get an on-screen death for “the best boss [Benson] ever had!

However, it was a great excuse for a Benson-Stabler reunion, as she runs into him outside of the bar, avoiding his discomfort with funerals. Benson speaks to the events, telling him, “I just feel like we’re entering into our all our friends are dying era”, to which he adds “the worst era”. Stabler then tells Benson, “We had a pretty good run there for a minute”, and she reassures him, “We still do, just different.” 

Even though it’s a super-emotional time for Benson, she’s still faced with a huge decision and opportunity. Chief Tynan calls Benson into her office to talk about consolidating SVU across all five boroughs, and making her a deputy chief, with every unit reporting in to her. Benson isn’t sure, and is taken aback by Tynan’s comments about this being a “great way to think about ending your career”.

We’ll just have to tune in to see what this means for Benson, and the direction she wants to head in!
