In a world of protagonists, strong queer female leads are my favorite. They are witty, daring, funny, inventive, and sharp. You simply do not want to miss these three incredible movies lead by strong queer female leads.

Bottoms

Amazon/MGM Studios

Bottoms is an outrageously hysterical and completely inventive movie about two friends, PJ and Josie, played by Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri respectively, who start a high school fight club in order to meet their female classmates and lose their virginity before graduation. As you can imagine, they find themselves in over their head. Their self-defense skills and their very friendship are put on the line. Bottoms is a raunchy, unique, and honestly refreshing comedy movie. It works hard in all the right ways and is so effortlessly cool.

My Old Ass

Amazon/MGM Studios

If you could talk to your older self, what would you ask? If you could talk to your younger self, what would you tell them? Prompted by a mushroom trip, 18-year-old Elliott enjoying her last summer before college, played by Maisy Stella, is confronted with her sarcastic and witty 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza. As the two selves talk, 39-year-old Elliot has some warnings to share. With this information, 18-year-old Elliot must evaluate the romantic love, family connections, friendships, and major life choices for her future. My Old Ass will make you laugh, it will make you cry, but most of all it will remind you that moments in life are so ephemeral. This movie guides you to hold on to happy moments and to love, regardless of what the future holds.

Drive-Away Dolls

Amazon/MGM Studios

Drive-Away Dolls is a playful wild, and eventful movie about two women driving down south. Jamie, played by Margaret Qualley, and Marian, played by Geraldine Viswanathan, are two queer best friends who desperately need to take a break from reality. The duo decide to take a rental car down south to Tallahassee to forget their troubles and relax. However, things go awry when they find themselves caught up in a wild criminal scheme. I mean this when I say that the big reveal in Drive-Away Dolls was nothing I could have imagined. This movie is raunchy and hilarious, but does not take itself too seriously. Drive-Away Dolls masterfully builds the relationships between characters, but also tastefully teases the tension of the criminal scheme’s grand reveal.
