This True Crime Documentary Will Leave You Sobbing… And Seething
There are so many documentaries out there, it can be difficult to wade through the muck to find the best ones.
But whenever I have the chance to recommend just one to someone interested in the genre, the answer comes easily. It’s always Dear Zachary. The trouble is that this touching, sad, and infuriating movie is the epitome of “You have to go in blind.” The less you know about it, the better. So how do I get you to watch this movie? Don’t watch any trailers. Don’t read any reviews. This spoiler-free article is all you need.
The basic premise of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)
The catalyst for the film is represented in the title. The movie is about a documentary filmmaker who decides to create a movie about his best friend so the young son he left behind after his death can learn about this great man. With a description like that, you’re probably understanding how important it is to watch this with a box of Kleenex.
From there, the movie takes more twists and turns than your favorite theme park rollercoaster. You’ll run the gamut of emotions to the point of feeling wrung-out afterward.
This is the perfect movie to recommend to others.
And that’s what I’m doing right now. After you watch this documentary film, you’ll likely tell all your friends to watch it for two big reasons:
- You’ll wait for the initial reaction, likely in the form of an all-caps text message or an anguished, expletive-riddled voice memo.
- You can finally rage with someone else who knows the story of what happens in Dear Zachary. Because I promise you’ll want to talk about it, even just to let some of your emotions float away so you can actually have a good night’s sleep.
Have I convinced you? If so, watch Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father on Prime Video.
