Equal parts funny and heartbreaking, this Taika Waititi film feels more poignant than ever before.

Writer, director, and actor Taika Waititi is know for some stellar comedies. But, in 2019, he came out with a satirical drama that had so much heart and tear-jerking poignancy that it very rightfully earned an Academy Award.

You might know Taika Waititi as the creator of What We Do In The Shadows, directing one of the best MCU movies (Thor: Ragnarok), or his role as Blackbeard in Our Flag Means Death. When you think of the Kiwi filmmaker, you might strictly think of his comedy. That makes sense–he does a great job at bringing the laughs. But then he wrote, directed, and starred in 2019’s Jojo Rabbit about a little boy in 1940s Germany whose imaginary friend is a hilarious Adolf Hitler (played by Waititi himself). Sounds intriguing right? Today, we’re talking about the must-see comedy drama, Jojo Rabbit, streaming now on Hulu.

What is Jojo Rabbit about?

It’s nearing the end of Hitler’s regime in Germany and 10-year-old Jojo Betzler is a big, big fan of his country’s leader. He sees the propaganda and thinks, “Yes, this is what Germany needs.” He even joins the junior section of the Hitler Youth, a group of children encouraged to learn warfare in the name of the Nazis.

Soon young Jojo starts to realize that made Hitler shouldn’t be his wise-cracking imaginary friend and that maybe things aren’t actually the way that he seems. Not only that, but his mom, played by Scarlett Johansson, may have disagreed with him all along. But will he accept the truth or hold tight to his previous naïve beliefs?

Why watch it now?

That’s a really good question. Why could that be? I mean, World War II ended 80 years ago. Perhaps it’s because it isn’t just children who are susceptible to propaganda. And it isn’t just children who can learn and grow and change once they realize that a nationalist regime or power-hungry dictator isn’t as great as they thought they were.

What I do know is that this is a wonderful movie–equal parts funny and heartbreaking–that feels more relevant than ever. And Taika Waititi more than earned the Oscar for best adapted screenplay that he received for it.

Watch Jojo Rabbit with friends and family on Hulu.
