Amazon Prime Has The Best Romantic Comedy Of 2024

In a surprise to anyone who has noticed the total lack of quality rom coms in the last decade, 2024 had a lot of contenders for best romantic comedy.

2024 brought us Hit Man and Lisa Frankenstein, The Idea of You and so many more. While these were hits worthy of the attention and praise that they got, there was a little indie romantic comedy that totally flew under the radar for a lot of people. Based on a Wattpad romance novel, this coming-of-age summertime rom com was a clear winner for me in 2024. Whether you identify with the “out of shape” main character, the fun friends she makes along the way, or the surprisingly sensitive jock who helps her find herself, there’s something for everyone here. What movie am I talking about? Boot Camp! And it’s now playing on Amazon Prime.

What is Boot Camp about?

Whitney has a crush on her friend, but when he keeps going back to his mean, bullying girlfriend, Whitney vows to make a huge change: Signing up for a fitness summer camp despite the fact that she’s out of shape and has previously had no interest in fitness or sports.

Now Whitney’s at camp and has to endure an overzealous (and surprisingly hot) personal trainer, the upsetting realization that her bully’s at camp, and the self-sabotage that can come for any of us. But perhaps channeling the badass main character of her favorite fantasy novel will help her make it through.

What makes Boot Camp special?

This romance has several major things going for it. Rather than a stable of cookie-cutter side characters, the rest of the cast is filled with likeable people that you’re happy to see cross the screen. Whitney’s roommate, Martina, is a delight in every scene she’s in.

Then there’s the message. If this movie came out in the early ’00s, the conclusion would be something like, “You need to lose weight if you want to be loved.” Boot Camp could have so easily gone in this direction but it miraculously pivoted. Instead, they aim more toward health, fitness, and self-acceptance. As a plus size goddess myself, I appreciate that narrative.

But the most notable and memorable thing about Boot Camp is the chemistry between the two leads, Whitney and Axel. Because the quality of a rom com hinges on the chemistry of the romantic leads, this can make or break a rom com. By the end of the movie, you thoroughly believe their romance. The way he looks at her? This is what will stick with you long after the 94 minutes of runtime are up.
