Have a free night and a thirst for a paranormal romance movie? Check out one of these hidden gems.

When you think “paranormal romance” there are certain movies probably popping up in your brain. None of us can help images of Edward and Jacob from Twilight or even Demi Moore making pottery with her dead husband in Ghost. But what about the movies that haven’t become pillars of the subgenre? Just because you forgot about these paranormal romance movies, that doesn’t mean they aren’t damn good. If you have a free night and want to watch a hidden gem, check these out.

The Covenant (2006)

Sony Pictures

It’s criminal that few remember this 2006 witchy boy movie, especially when you see the cast. Sebastian Stan? Chace Crawford? It’s full of the hot guys of the time and all about a new girl in school and the group of four teen boys about to ascend into their full witch powers. Mysterious murders hit the small town and suddenly everyone’s a suspect. Watch The Covenant on AMC+.

The Invisible (2007)

Buena Vista

Nick wakes up one day to go to school, but no one can see him. It turns out he may be dead–or close to it–and the only person who can help him is Annie, the bad girl in school. Why does he feel so connected to her? This movie didn’t do very well at the time despite being a fun and original movie. Don’t believe the low Rotten Tomato rating. Watch The Invisible on Amazon Video.

Blood and Chocolate (2007)

MGM

Vivian meets a handsome graphic novelist, Aiden, but she knows this isn’t a safe relationship to have. Why? Because she’s a werewolf and her pack leader is particularly jealous and ruthless, making it unsafe for Aiden. Still, who can stay away from a hot guy who actually treats you with respect? Let the Right One In (2008)

Sandrew Metronome

Now, would I call this tale of a little boy befriending a centuries-old vampire a romance? No, but I’m in the minority here. Plenty of people find their friendship and protection over each other sweet and romantic, so who am I to judge? And either way, it’s a great movie. (Just don’t bother with the American remake.) Watch Let the Right One In on Prime Video, Peacock, and Tubi.

Beautiful Creatures (2013)

Warner Bros. Pictures

The new kid in town is falling for the pretty, awkward girl, but what he doesn’t realize is that she’s actually from a family of witches and she’s about to age into her dark powers. Their love is doomed–or is it? Some people hated this at the time because it didn’t really follow the book it was based on, but if you never read it, you may enjoy what it’s become. Watch Beautiful Creatures on Amazon Video.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

Soda Pictures

Tom Hiddleston as an ageless vampire forever in love with a vampy Tilda Swinton? Yeah, it’s criminal that this romantic drama came and went without anyone noticing. Alas, you can see what it’s like when vampire live quietly and secretly among us if you just give this lovely romance a chance. Watch Only Lovers Left Alive on Paramount+.

Before I Fall (2017)

Open Road Films

In yet another time loop scenario, Samantha keeps living the same day–February 12th, Cupid’s Day–over and over. In the process of figuring out why she’s stuck in this loop, she grows her relationships with Rob and Kent and her friendships with her friends. This is a truly forgotten gem. Watch Before I Fall on Amazon Video.

The Invitation (2022)

Sony Pictures

I will never forgive the advertising campaign for this movie getting the trailers totally wrong. You can blame its poor viewership on the fact that they mis-advertised this gothic romance as a jump scare-filled horror movie. Instead, it’s about a woman going to England after learning of relatives there–and falling for a gorgeous man in the process. And that’s all you should know before watching it. Watch The Invitation on Hulu.
