Sweater Weather Cinema: 4 Cozy Movies Perfect For Fall
The air is starting to turn crisp and the days are a little bit shorter, and the #1 thing I want to do after a long day of work is light a few candles, cuddle up under a blanket, and watch something that fills me with nostalgia and comfort.
I crave a movie that isn’t necessarily scary this time of year, but is full of oranges and browns, everyone wearing sweater vests and cardigans, and the crisp fall air circling the storyline. If you are looking for movies just like I am, keep reading for four recommendations for you.
Dead Poets Society (1989)

Dead Poets Society is so angsty, full of melancholy, and a movie that warms my heart every time I watch it. This movie is about a new English teacher who gets thrown into an all-boys school with a ton of orthodox traditions. For him, he is anything but orthodox and starts helping his students break out of their shells and free themselves from the shackles of expectation. This is the perfect sweater weather movie because the school itself is steeped in iconic ivy and an old gothic charm. The students wear coats and scarves as they traipse through the fog-ladden campus.
You’ve Got Mail (1998)

You’ve Got Mail is the perfect fall rom-com, hands down. Set in New York City, the story follows a man and a woman who meet online over their shared love of books, movies, and New York in the fall. What they don’t know is that one of them, Joe, owns a large corporate chain of bookstores that is threatening to shut down a locally owned bookstore owned by his internet romance, Kathleen. Joe finds out before Kathleen and he struggles with balancing their online romance plus their in real life dislike of each other. This movie is the epitome of walking through a cobblestone street with a pumpkin spice latte in hand.
Little Women (2019)

While there are two versions of this movie, I am specifically speaking on Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women from 2019. This movie deserves a spot on the list because it is so homey and speaks to the connection of love and family. The movie goes through all the seasonal shifts, but their autumnal season is rich in harvest colors, chunky sweaters, and has a glow of sisterhood. The story follows four sisters in their years after the Civil War and how they deal with heartache, loss, love, and illness.
Knives Out (2019)

Murder mysteries have a deep sense of autumn to them, and Knives Out is a classic whodunnit that is just right for this time of year. Knives Out follows a hilarious detective as he investigates the death of a crime novelist. His task is to interview and keep an eye on the novelist’s family because there is a web of lies to be unraveled and a ton of red herrings to decipher. Knives Out is quintessential on this list because the landscape glows with fall colors, features a huge English mansion, and everyone wears plaid.
