The 5 Best TV Shows With Black Main Characters

Here we celebrate the best of Black television.

By

Insecure / HBO

We are still in full swing of Black History Month and while we should always celebrate our black stars and creatives, it is extra important to do so right now.

There are plenty of sketch comedy, drama, thriller, and sitcom options to choose from, so it can make narrowing down a few shows to watch a little more challenging. If you’re looking for something to binge-watch this month while you try to disassociate from the dumpster fire surrounding you, utilize this list to start somewhere!

Atlanta

FX

If you haven’t watched Atlanta already, run and go watch it right now! Starring Donald Glover and Brian Tyree Henry, two cousins are working in the music scene in Atlanta to improve their lives and the lives of their families. The show is all about the balance between rap life, street life, and real life and how they all intersect to affect their success. Atlanta is streaming on Hulu.

Black-Ish

ABC

Black-Ish is another amazing show that you can’t miss. The all-star cast includes Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Laurence Fishburne, and Yara Shahidi. The show is about a family who has done all the right things to be comfortable and successful. However, they start to wonder if their success has diminished their cultural roots and assimilated them too much into White America. While maintaining their success, the family prepares to celebrate their roots. Black-Ish is streaming on Hulu.

Claws

TNT

As someone who used to live in Florida, watching Claws is that much more hilarious to me. Claws is about a group of manicurists who live in Central Florida and are doing their best to hustle in a less-than-stellar economy while juggling the intricacies of their day-to-day lives. Niecy Nash, Judy Reyes, and Harold Perrineau star in this hit show on Hulu.

Dear White People

Netflix

This is probably my favorite on this list because Dear White People is just perfect in so many ways. The show is based on a movie by the same name about a group of black students at a predominantly white Ivy League College. The show chronicles what these characters go through as they face issues of racial bias, injustice, misogyny, and activism. Dear White People stars Logan Browning, Brandon P Bell, and Antoinette Robertson and it is streaming on Netflix.

Insecure

HBO

Insecure is amazing and perfect for anyone who struggles with confidence in a world of pseudo-cockiness. Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji star as two friends who are trying to navigate the world and the uncomfortableness of everyday experiences while also confronting their flaws. Insecure is comedic gold while also confronting real-life experiences that many face socially and racially. Insecure is streaming on Max.
