Feeling nostalgic for the 90s? Check out these amazing movies from 1994. (Yes, it’s been 30 years. Feel old?)
The 90s are booming right now, and Millennials are loving it. Gen Z really has no idea what the 90s was like, but they sure love to ride the wave of nostalgia that all of us feel when seeing flared jeans, checkerboard prints, and even the resurgence of movies and shows from the 90s. For the younger generation, it’s a chance to get cultured in all things 90s, and one of the best ways to do that is to watch movies from the decade. So, in honor of the year 1994, here are 10 movies you should revisit 30 years later.
Pulp Fiction
Let’s start off with a Quentin Tarantino classic and cult film. Pulp Fiction is amazing, and I will not be taking objections. Uma Thurman, John Travolta, and Samuel L Jackson all in one film? Perfection. Pulp Fiction has violence, gangsters, dance montages, and a Royale with cheese. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s time. Watch Pulp Fiction on Max.
Clerks
The thing with 90s films is that they aren’t really about anything, but they’re about everything. Clerks is a great example of that. Dante and Randal spend their days working at a convenience store, talking about movies, and annoying everyone they interact with, while Jay and Silent Bob dance for the camera. It’s a masterpiece. Watch Clerks on Prime Video, Paramount+, or MGM+.
Interview With the Vampire
Changing pace a bit here, Interview With The Vampire is a 90s goth kid’s dream. It’s the epic life story of a man turned vampire and how he dealt with tragedy, loss, love, and living for hundreds of years. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Kirsten Dunst helm the cast, and those three in old-timey frilly dresses and suits is so worth the watch. Watch Interview With the Vampire on Amazon Video.
Dumb and Dumber
It’s not a 90s list without Jim Carey, and Dumb and Dumber is another movie that really isn’t about anything. Starring Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels, two friends with less-than-stellar IQs head out across the country to return a briefcase to the woman who lost it. It also has the most annoying sound in the world, but you’ll know when you hear it. Watch Dumb and Dumber on Netflix.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Another Jim Carey classic, Ace Ventura, is timeless. The jokes always land, the overt goofiness is well-timed, and the plot is crazy enough to be incredible. An animal detective searches high and low for the missing Miami Dolphins mascot and meets criminals and weird situations all along the way. The movie is chock-full of the signature Carey humor, and you won’t regret watching it. Watch Ace Ventura: Pet Detective on Amazon Video.
The Mask
Okay, I promise this will be the last Jim Carey film. The Mask is *chef’s kiss*. A bank clerk finds a mystery mask that transforms him into an incredibly manic superhero of sorts. He’s green, a singing machine, and his yellow suit is stunning. If you’re feeling down on your luck, let The Mask show you that a fated encounter at any time can turn you into a crazy vigilante. Watch The Mask on Tubi.
Ed Wood
This one is a little lesser known. It’s the second on this list entirely in black and white and stars Johnny Depp as Ed Wood. This Tim Burton classic deserves more love as it follows the real-life Ed Wood and his determination to make the best Hollywood film ever. He’s talentless, but he’s full of ambition. We see him alongside names like Vampira and Bela Lugosi and how they band together to make Planet 9 From Outer Space. If you like weird, Ed Wood is for you. Watch Ed Wood on Amazon Video.
Speed
Keanu Reeves has been living in a Keanussaince since the 90s, and it’s well deserved. One 1994 film that he was in was Speed. He and Sandra Bullock star in this action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat as Keanu has to prevent a bomb from exploding in a city bus. Bullock and Keanu are always golden, especially when they work together, and Speed should be added to your watch list. Watch Speed on Starz.
The Crow
Since it’s coming into recent news thanks to a remake, it’s only fair to mention the original The Crow. Starring Brandon Lee, who died in a tragic accident during filming, The Crow is another movie for the goth kids. A true love story is cut short when a man and his future wife are brutally murdered. The man comes back to life after being killed and avenges his fiancé’s death. The whole movie is dark and gritty and quintessentially 90s. It’s perfect; no notes. Watch The Crow on Prime Video.
Airheads
Brendan Fraser, Steve Buscemi, and Adam Sandler star in Airheads, and if you consider yourself an Adam Sandler fan or if you’ve ever worn a flannel, you need to watch this movie. Three friends and band members hold a radio station hostage as they attempt to get their 15 seconds of fame and their music played for a larger audience. It’s hilarious and has a great message about never giving up on your dreams–But maybe don’t hold anyone hostage. It isn’t currently streaming anywhere, which is a massive shame.
