The 3 Best TV Shows To Watch After ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Come here for more serial killer goodness.

By

Most fans might have justifiably believed they’d seen the last of Michael C. Hall’s moraled serial killer with the final moments of Dexter: New Blood. But if there’s one thing Dexter Morgan is good at (aside from murdering cold-blooded killers, that is), it’s avoiding seemingly insurmountable odds when it comes to being captured or killed.

With the Bay Harbor Butcher returning to the small screen in Dexter: Resurrection, fans are once again able to enjoy Hall’s most famous character as he confronts familiar faces from his past and faces off against emerging new enemies in his present.

With Dexter: Resurrection continuing to delight viewers on Paramount+ and Showtime, we decided to highlight several similarly-veined series audiences might want to check out as they watch Hall’s anti-hero hack and slash his way through New York City.

Breaking Bad

AMC

Upon first glance, it’s hard to think of a series more dissimilar to Dexter than AMC’s modern classic, Breaking Bad. But between its morally ambiguous main characters and unique emphasis on criminal alter egos, Breaking Bad makes for a wonderfully nuanced companion piece to Dexter and its subsequent sequel series. With Bryan Cranston’s Walter White matching Dexter in both depth and emotional resonance, Breaking Bad is a series every viewer should make an effort to watch at least once, similar in many ways to The Wire or The Sopranos before it.

Mindhunter

Netflix

Despite its heartbreaking cancellation after a mere two seasons, Netflix’s Mindhunter comes packed to the brim with plenty of remarkable characteristics, from the performances of its main cast to its chilling exploration of actual true-crime cases. Based on John Douglas’ unforgettable non-fiction book, Mindhunter provides an in-depth study of the F.B.I.’s burgeoning Behavioral Science Unit, complete with haunting interviews with some America’s most notorious serial killers (Ed Kemper, David Berkowitz, Richard Speck, Charles Manson, etc.).

Hannibal

NBC

With the possible exception of Dexter himself, we challenge you to think of a psychopath more charming than Mads Mikkelsen’s charismatic Hannibal Lecter. With the James Bond actor knocking it out of the park as the infamous fictional serial killer, Hannibal serves as a fresh and modern take on Thomas Harris’ novel series, tracing the fine line between the mindset of an unhinged serial killer (Lecter) and his more restrained law enforcement counterpart (Will Graham, as portrayed by Hugh Dancy).
