4 Great Movies To Watch After New Mike Flanagan Movie ‘The Life Of Chuck’

Here's what to watch next.

Most people more readily associate Stephen King with his countless horror novels, not to mention the subsequent adaptations based on his work.

While King continues to earn acclaim for his forays into the genre with books like The Shining, It, and Misery, every so often, the author releases a far more uplifting story focusing on relatable themes and characters.

Based on King’s novella of the same name, The Life of Chuck very much falls into this distinct category. Offering up a layered portrayal of an ordinary man’s life from his fateful death backwards up to his eventful childhood, The Life of Chuck is more assuredly a Stephen King movie the likes of which audiences have rarely seen. As the film continues to earn rave reviews, we decided to put together a list of movies that bear a striking resemblance to The Life of Chuck, either through their grounded story or nuanced portrayal of time itself.

Boyhood (2014)

IFC Films

Often cited as one of the greatest movies of the 21st century, most people commend Boyhood for its fascinating approach to real-world filmmaking. Following a young man as he grows from childhood into late adolescence, Boyhood’s dedicated approach to filming saw the movie shot in real-time over the course of 11 years. Through this experimental filming process, viewers are able to better witness how the years go about shaping who we are and the type of person we slowly grow to become.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Paramount Pictures

In many ways, you can almost describe The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as a fantastical version of Forrest Gump. Following Brad Pitt’s titular character as he ages from an old man into a progressively younger youth, Benjamin Button also underscores just how we as people can change depending on our specific wants in life. Or as Benjamin himself so thoughtfully puts it, “It’s never too late – or in my case, too early – to be who you want to be.”

Beau Is Afraid (2023)

A24

We’re not going to lie – chances are, you’re either going to love Beau Is Afraid or avidly hate it. Earning a divisive response from both ordinary viewers and professional critics alike, Beau Is Afraid is an exercise in existential comedic horror, taking viewers on a nightmarish journey through a man’s surreal life. Dark, funny, and undeniably cringe-inducing from start to finish, it’s a movie that, for better or worse, is unlike anything you’ll ever see.

Moonlight (2016)

A24

Moonlight might not seem to bear any overt similarities to The Life of Chuck or any other film on this list. But through its inventive approach to linear storytelling, this 2016 Oscar winner winds up emphasizing just much time and our surroundings influence our personality. A powerful illustration of the impact both nature and nurture have on us, Moonlight is a riveting coming of age drama film that packs a wallop of punch in terms of its story, characters, and the performances of the cast involved, leaving little reason to wonder about its gleaming critical success almost a decade later.
