7 X-Men Characters We Hope Return For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Now that Disney owns X-Men, we're in for a treat.

Certain movies always invite a degree of widespread anticipation from international viewers.

Just as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars command hordes of dedicated fans across the globe, so too does The Avengers continue to grab audiences’ attention the world over, especially with a cast list as star-studded as the upcoming Doomsday

With several actors set to reprise their roles from Fox’s X-Men universe (including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn), it’s perhaps worth wondering which other X-Men characters might appear in The Avengers: Doomsday.

Iceman

Iceman in X-Men: The Last Stand

Iceman may not have played an altogether central role in the later X-Men films, but he held a memorable place as a fledgling superhero throughout the first three X-Men movies. Initially portrayed as a teenage student at the Xavier Institute, Bobby Drake slowly became one of the most dependable members of the X-Men, his gradual growth into hero status forming a backbone of the initial X-Men movies. Given that audiences have typically seen a younger iteration of Iceman on-screen, an older version of the character could indeed appear in Doomsday, allowing Shawn Ashmore a chance to reprise his role as everyone’s favorite frosty mutant.

Storm

As one of the original members of Fox’s X-Men, Halle Berry handed in the definitive iteration of the superhuman team’s stalwart leader, Ororo Munroe. The weather-powered lieutenant to Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Berry’s version of Storm was last seen taking over the leadership of both the X-Men and the Xavier Institute at the close of The Last Stand. While Berry herself has publicly confirmed she will not appear in Doomsday, there’s always the possibility Berry’s comments could be a clever promotional ploy to throw fans’ off her scent. (After all, Andrew Garfield said he wouldn’t appear in No Way Home, only to once again don the blue-and-red suit of Spider-Man in the finished film.)

Jean Grey

Like Magneto, Professor X, or Mystique, both versions of Jean Grey in Fox’s X-Men universes remain vastly complex characters in their own right. Initially played by Famke Janssen before GoT’s Sophie Turner assumed the role, Jean Grey has remained an integral member of each iteration of the X-Men. The telepathic pupil of Professor X whose unstable handling of her powers manifests into her “Dark Phoenix” alter ego, there’s little question audiences would love to see any portrayal of Jean in Doomsday, regardless of whether she’s portrayed by Janssen or Turner.

Rogue

Yet another original member of the cinematic X-Men, Anna Paquin’s Rogue plays a central role in the first two X-Men movies, serving as a surrogate daughter to Wolverine and an overarching love interest for fellow mutant Bobby Drake. While Paquin never again had a prominent role in the series after X2, fans are still hungry to see the return of Rogue in a potential MCU project. Yes, her powers might not be as flashy as Iceman or Cyclops, but her heartfelt dedication to the team and her insecurity about her own powers make her an interesting addition to the pro-mutant organization.

Quicksilver

Oh, the wasted potential behind Evan Peters’ role in WandaVision. Though at first it seemed like Peters would be the first Fox-era X-Men actor to cross over into the MCU, Peters’ Quicksilver lookalike was revealed to be little more than an ordinary Westview resident named Ralph Bohner. While most fans rolled their eyes in frustration at this unfortunate plot twist, there’s always room for Peters’ more faithful take on Quicksilver to once again race across our screens in another prospective Marvel project.

Deadpool

Deadpool

After making his official debut in the MCU with 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, fans are furiously wondering about Deadpool’s limitless potential in Marvel’s larger continuity. A pipe dream for the last decade, viewers’ hopes of one day seeing the Merc with the Mouth interact with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, or Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man has finally become a reality. With that being said, we can only cross our fingers at the chance of seeing Deadpool emerge in Doomsday, further capitalizing on the momentum established by Deadpool & Wolverine before it.

Wolverine

Fans have spent the better part of 20 years wondering about Hugh Jackman’s presence in the MCU. Just when it seemed like Jackman would never appear in a Marvel project, however, the actor returned to the role he helped make famous, making that gigantic leap into Marvel’s mainline universe with 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. With Deadpool himself humorously stating that Marvel will use Wolverine until Jackman is 90, what better time is there for the actor’s rugged anti-hero to return than Avengers: Doomsday? (Besides, at 56-years-old, Jackman’s still got a good 34 years before he can officially call it quits!)
