This Is What It Means To Truly Find Yourself

Amidst the chaos, the unpredictability and the complexities of life;

There comes a point in time where you glance back at your reflection in the mirror and realize that you no longer recognize the person staring back at you. “What have I become?” you start to wonder, while all of your past life decisions come crashing down on you like a tsunami.

You think back at that time when you stayed up late with your friends instead of revising for that upcoming test, when your doubts held you back from going after something that you want so badly or that impulsive act of dyeing your hair or getting a tattoo done.

Well, this is what it means to find yourself.

Take the time off to self-reflect.

It could be a day, a week or even a month. Take a gap year if you need to, think about the life you’re leading now and whether it’s something that you’d advocate. Are you happy? Do you feel good about yourself or whatever you’re pursuing now? When was the last time you truly smiled?

Find out what makes you happy.

Does this job you’re stuck in makes you feel happy? If it does, good for you. If it doesn’t, then what’s keeping you there? Is the money worth the unhappiness? If taking pictures, baking or collecting stamps make you feel happy, set aside some time for you to relish in them without feeling guilty about it.

Get rid of any sources of toxicity.

Is the new Pokémon Go app hindering your sleeping patterns? Does scrolling through Instagram make you feel small and insecure? Is the lifestyle that you’re leading now one that takes a toll on your body and your mind? Are the people around you treating you less than what you deserve? If it’s a yes to any of it, it’s time to break away from it.

Get in touch with yourself – know your weakness, your strengths, your pet peeves and your passion.

It is when we truly grasp ourselves that we can fully maximize our potential and be the best version of ourselves.

You are what and who you immerse yourself with.

It is what it is. If you’re surrounded by people who are arrogant and uncouth, you’ll soon find yourself picking up bits and pieces of their characteristics and before you know it, you’ve turned into one of them. On the other hand, if you’re around people who are eccentric, positive and kind, you’ll slowly feed off their vibes and feel uplifted too.

You are not alone.

Trust me, you are not the only one that faces this. Life is always unpredictable and nothing is ever permanent. It is alright to feel lost now and then, as long as you find yourself in the end. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
