Will There Be A Sequel To The Amateur? Its Director Thinks So
Box office hit The Amateur landed successful ratings from audiences and critics alike on its opening weekend.
Starring Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne, the film follows a CIA cryptographer (played by Rami Malek) whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack. When the CIA refuses to pursue her killers, Malek’s character blackmails his superiors to be given the training to go after and kill each of the terrorists involved in his wife’s murder himself.
The Amateur had everything it needed to succeed as an action movie — and audiences were thrilled to see a main character that was anything but your typical action movie main. Initially, The Amateur wasn’t supposed to have a sequel — but it’s now looking possible that the movie actually will.
The Amateur is based off of another movie and book of the same name. Neither of these titles have a sequel following them — but the 2025 version of the movie went off-script to hint to audiences that there could be potential for a future sequel. An end credits scene showed Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne’s characters meeting up to give a subtle shout out to Malek’s potential future at the CIA thanks to his new skills.
Laurence Fishburn and director James Hawes have already confirmed that they both want to see The Amateur return to box offices with a sequel. The end credits scene was specifically added as a tease for a potential future franchise, which would go out on its own with no original book to adapt.
There’s no telling whether or not The Amateur will make its return again in the future, especially since the film is still playing in theaters at the time of writing. The studio has not commented on whether there will eventually be a sequel, and all that Hawes could say was that he eventually hoped to make another The Amateur film, not that there was any discussion around its creation.
