What’s Actually Going On With The Next Rey Skywalker ‘Star Wars’ Film?
By Nina Sterle
In 2023, it was announced that the titular character of Star Wars Episode VII to Episode IX, Rey Skywalker, would appear once more for a follow-up film set 15 years later. The film poised the idea of continuing Rey’s character arc similarly to how Obi Wan Kenobi’s character developed between the prequels and original Star Wars films.
Not every fan was excited about this potential new movie, as many loud voices on social media were hoping for brand new Star Wars content that would create a new saga for the series — if fans want anything new at all, that is, as many are content to leave the series where it is now. However, there is a lot of well-deserved buzz around Rey’s character across the globe even now, so it’s no surprise that Disney was toying around with bringing the character back for future movies.

Originally, Rey’s next appearance was slated for late 2026. However, filming for the movie — titled The New Jedi Order — was announced to have been postponed in 2024, and still has not started as of now. This led to some speculation that the entire film has been canceled — and it’s true that no one at Disney has said anything recently about the production of The New Jedi Order, either, which has sparked concern that the film may have fallen off the list for good.
Producer Simon Kinberg is currently working on the next Star Wars trilogy, which as of now has no name or release date. The only name we know to be upcoming for Star Wars is the original Mandalorian movie (based off the television show), which will be released in 2026. There are a few other mystery projects slated for 2026 and 2027. One of these is expected to be The New Jedi Order, at least according to hopeful fans.

It’s become quite clear that The New Jedi Order will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, though no recent updates have surfaced from the director herself. However, it is possible that Rey will make even more appearances in the other unnamed Star Wars films that are slated to release within the next few years — especially if Kinberg’s new trilogy revives a few old characters for the next installment in the series.
Daisy Ridley herself has commented several times on the new Star Wars movie, and has teased her excitement about returning once more to her old role, confirming that we’d at least get to see one familiar face in some new future Star Wars content.
