‘The Amateur’ Is The Next Rami Malek Movie You Can’t Miss In April
By Nina Sterle
This April, actor Rami Malek will take the lead in a brand new (well, sort of) espionage film that’s sure to be just as heart-wrenching as it is thrilling.
Malek will play Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer, whose wife passes away during a terrorist attack. Hopeful that the CIA will act against the terrorist, Heller quickly realizes that they actually plan to do nothing — which leads Heller into disregarding his role as cryptographer and taking matters into his own hands, determined to seek out personal revenge against his wife’s killers.

This film has technically seen theaters before, though this adaptation is certainly brand new. The 1981 film The Amateur was the original version of this movie, which was actually based off of the 1981 book The Amateur. That’s quite a lot of amateurs floating around — though there’s certainly a lot to indicate that this 2025 movie may very well be the best one yet.
While The Amateur was originally slated to release in late 2024, its release date was pushed back to April of 2025 — and it’s finally about to see theaters beginning on April 11th.
The film is sure to be an exciting version of a classic espionage revenge story, as it sees Malek’s character pushed out of his element in the search for revenge. Originally a shy and unsuspecting desk-only CIA agent, Malek turns to blackmail and murder in order to avenge his wife. The film promises to be exciting, terrifying, and a likely tearjerker all at once — there’s not many genres that this movie won’t cover, in fact.
Because Malek’s character is, at heart, a cryptographer, the movie also focuses on a lot of technical action that promises both ingenuity along with action-packed thrills. It’s a refreshing twist on the heavily physical, action-only violence plot lines that are fun but common from action films within the past few years.

The film’s global release will take place on April 11th, and the film will stay in theaters until it eventually moves to streaming. The Amateur is produced by 20th Century Studios — owned by The Walt Disney Company — which means that it could likely go to Hulu to stream after it finishes its in-theater run, though it could also see availability on Disney+.
