Yes, ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Is Actually Getting A Sequel
By Nina Sterle
The highly-anticipated Five Nights At Freddy’s film released in late 2023, and though there wasn’t a long-time fan of the series who wasn’t excited for its box office debut, it received devastatingly low scores. With a 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed unlikely that the film based on the infamous video game franchise would be getting a sequel — but that was proved wrong when filming began for the FNAF franchise yet again in November of 2024.
Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 has a release date currently set for December 5th, 2025. But will it stand up to fans’ expectations where it failed the first time?

First of all, there have been a few announcements on where the direction of FNAF 2 will be taken. The director, Emma Tammi, has stated that the second movie will be more terrifying than the first film — though what exactly that means is still yet to be discovered. Secondly, the second movie will keep the PG-13 rating that the first film had, in an attempt to retain its younger audience demographic.
Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard will all rejoin the franchise once more for the second film, continuing their roles from the first FNAF film. This confirms the announcement that the second film will follow the video game version of Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, which also follows a security guard working nightshift at a haunted pizzeria, but with new characters and game mechanics.

The official video game lore of the second movie brings in a new main character rather than bringing back the security guard of the initial video game, Mike Schmidt (played by Josh Hutcherson in the movie). However, Mike Schmidt has more lore and a more significant connection to the video game series canonically, so the movie series will continue to follow him rather than introducing a new main character.
The second video game also introduces a new location and new lore for the franchise. How closely the movie will follow this lore is still unknown, especially considering how significantly the movie strayed from the plot of the original video game.
It’s likely that this particular sequel has already lost out on some of its original audience members given the poor ratings of the original movie. However, the first film was financially a massive success, bringing in $297 million dollars worldwide to become Blumhouse’s most financially successful box office release. Its largest target demographic – young teens and children – was also not reflected in its online reviews, which means that the film series as a whole has a wider receptive audience than its online rankings and social media reviews would suggest.
While Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 might not see the exact same cash influx the first film received, it’s safe to say that the allure of the Five Nights At Freddy’s franchise as a whole still has a hold over adult and teen viewers alike. Regardless of how well the film goes over with its fans, it’s likely that it’ll be a success in terms of finances.
