By Nina Sterle
There’s a new small town thriller streaming now, and it’s one you won’t want to miss.
The idyllic town murder mystery is a genre that has a grip over modern thriller enthusiasts — this genre of film poses violent and gruesome secrets against a charming and unassuming backdrop.
Out now on Prime (Amazon streaming services), the new thriller is titled Holland. It stars Nicole Kidman as a teacher named Nancy Vandergroot living in Holland, Michigan, with her husband. Nancy loves her peaceful, small town world, but begins to uncover secrets that her husband has been hiding from her that may imply he lives a gruesome double life.
Holland, Michigan itself does have some perfectly creepy vibes according to some former residents. Most people can also agree that the setting brings a lot of idyllic small-town charm to this twisted mystery movie, which is chock-full of classic Holland imagery including tulips, Dutch dancing, and town parades.
This film is directed by Mimi Cave and also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Nancy’s potentially murderous husband, and Gael García Bernal as the main character’s colleague who also becomes entangled in the mystery with Nancy.
Holland made its premier appearance at the South by Southwest Festival on March 9th, before it was officially released to the public via Amazon Prime Video today (March 27th.)
