Gandolfini’s death made a posthumous nod (at either the Oscars or the Globes) likely, but I think his performance makes a strong case for recognition anyway. It’s the kind of role that makes you see an actor completely differently, allowed to be soulful and heart-breaking in a way he’s never been before. James Gandolfini has always been a great actor and even at this stage of his career, he was unafraid to show new sides of himself. If this is the role he left us with, it’s a great tribute a beloved actor.
