I Want To Be Yours, But Also (And Always) Mine

happy couple, sunset couple, loving you, being my own person, whole with you
Nathan Dumlao

I want to be the person you run to when your days are long. The arms you can’t wait to have wrapped around your middle, the voice you long to hear on the other end of the telephone.

I want to be your shared slice of pizza, your second straw in the milkshake, your messy half of the bathroom sink, your secret-keeper, promise-holder, favorite lips to kiss.

I want to be the body you can’t wait to hug tightly to yours, the laugh that intermixes so perfectly with your own, the smile that spreads across your face unconsciously. I want to be the woman you can’t wait to talk to, can’t wait to share every piece of your world with, little or big.

I want to be the soul you crave—mentally, physically, emotionally—every possible way.

I want to be yours: your person, your human, your forever love. But I also, and always want to be mine, too.

I want to be my own entity, my own being. I want to keep all the pieces of me that are unique and individual, all the ways I have, and always will be, separate and on my own.

I want to keep my passion, my sometimes selfishness, my silly, stubborn ways. I want to always have a drive for the things I’m passionate about, always be focused on work and hobbies even when I’m standing by your side.

I want to fall in love with you—deeply, fully, overwhelmingly. But I also want to stay true to myself.

I don’t want there to ever be a time when I look in the mirror and don’t recognize my reflection. Or think back on our life together and feel like I’ve given pieces of myself up for you.

I don’t want to change or alter everything I stand for just to make us work because I’ve learned that’s not love. And what I long for with you is real, pure, and true.

I don’t want to ever lose sight of the person I’m meant to become, and how that person will grow alongside you.

I don’t ever want to stop being mine even, and although, I’m promising to be forever yours.

I love you. And so that means I’m your partner, your fighter, your right-hand woman. I’m the one who will have your back, who will never stop caring, who will be the shoulder and strength when you have none.

I love you. And so that means I’m dedicated to you, loyal to you, forever determined to give and be all that I can for you, for us.

I love you. But that doesn’t mean I’m losing myself in our love.

I will be yours, but also mine. My own best friend, my own supporter, my own motivation.

I will not be your everything, just as you won’t be mine. We will, instead, complete each other’s wholeness, while still being who we are.

We are not each other’s ‘better halves,’ but pieces that add even more beauty and light to already full masterpieces. We are not the answers, the solutions, the missing parts but the wonderful additions that make us both realize what we’ve been searching for all along.

So I will love you, be yours.
