Peace Isn’t The Absence Of Chaos (It’s God’s Presence Within It)
Prior to his crucifixion, Jesus offers peace as a parting gift, implying it’s something tangible and transferable, available for each of us. Karin Hadadan, author of Beauty in the Stillness, explores that gift of peace throughout the devotional below, emphasizing that when life grows hectic, we still have peace in our Lord.
This peace is fundamentally different from worldly peace—which depends on external circumstances and remains conditional. Christ’s peace is permanent and unconditional, remaining steady through changing situations.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
Despite facing the most turbulent circumstances imaginable, Jesus demonstrates that true peace cannot coexist with fear within the heart, suggesting we too have agency in receiving it.
This divine peace isn’t just a concept but a living reality made possible through the Holy Spirit who Jesus promised would remain with us forever. It flows directly from the Spirit’s presence within us—not something we create through positive thinking, but a seed that grows naturally as we remain connected to God.
We can nurture this spiritual equilibrium by seeking God when troubled, focusing on the present moment rather than anxiously anticipating what lies ahead, and keeping our eyes fixed on Him rather than the challenging circumstances in front of us.
True peace isn’t found in changing circumstances, but in trusting God’s steady presence through them. Often, when anxiety or uncertainty arises, the natural impulse is to control external situations—seeking security in things that can never fully satisfy. Yet this kind of peace is fleeting, fading as quickly as the next challenge appears.
Lasting peace comes only through surrender—through turning from fear-based thinking and placing trust in God’s promises. As one learns to rest in His assurance, the heart becomes anchored in something far deeper than temporary calm. God’s divine peace transcends human understanding, quieting the mind and softening the spirit with the reminder that His presence is constant, unshaken, and always enough.
