5 Strange Superman Family Members That Could Show Up In James Gunn’s DCU
James Gunn isn’t just rebooting Superman, he’s actually unleashing a whole new kind of DCU – one that actually looks like it was inspired by the strange and wonderful fantasy characters you’d find between the pages of your favourite comic book. With Superman (2025) already teasing the inclusion of characters like Bizarro, Metamorpho and Baby Joey from the DC catalogue, it’s becoming pretty clear that anyone, or anything, could show up. Gunn gave us a talking raccoon and a dancing tree in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, so don’t be surprised if a super-powered monkey or radioactive cat lands in Metropolis soon.
You already know the Superman Family’s heavy hitters: Supergirl, Krypto, Steel, Power Girl, and yes, even Bizarro. But there’s a long list of forgotten, bizarre, and straight-up weird characters from Superman lore that might just be strange enough for Gunn’s twisted playground. Here are five oddballs from the Super-Family that could work in his DCU.
1. Streaky the Supercat

You’ve met Krypto. Now meet Streaky, Supergirl’s feisty floor lion. Back in the ’60s, Kara experimented with a weird form of Kryptonite, accidentally zapping her cat with superpowers. The result is a feline with flight, laser vision, and a serious attitude. If Gunn’s giving Krypto screen time, you better believe Streaky will claw his way into the story too. Just don’t get her in the same space as Krypto. The Fortress of Solitude might not survive it.
2. Beppo the Super-Monkey

Yes, Superman had a monkey. His name is Beppo. And no, we’re not making this up. Beppo was a test subject Jor-El launched into space before sending baby Kal-El to Earth. The monkey survived, landed on Earth years later, and immediately started causing chaos. I mean, who didn’t think giving a monkey heat vision was always going to be a problem? Beppo eventually teamed up with the rest of the Legion of Super-Pets, which means he had a better outcome than Michael Jackson’s Bubbles.
3. Zibarro

We all know Bizarro. But have you met Zibarro, the Bizarro of Bizarro? He lives on Bizarro World, looks like Superman, speaks normally, and is cursed with actual intelligence in a world that’s all kinds of wrong. Tragically, he has no powers. Imagine a film exploring the existential crisis of being the only sane person in a backwards world. That’s the sort of thing Gunn loves to explore in his films. He’s weird. He’s deep. He wears a big “Z” on his chest. We’re totally sold on seeing this character get the live-action treatment.
4. Composite Superman

Ever wanted to see a janitor with the powers of the entire Legion of Super-Heroes? No? Well, too bad. Joseph Meach got struck by lightning, absorbed all their powers, and decided to cosplay as a half-Superman, half-Batman villain. His name is Composite Superman. This dude literally rocks a suit that’s split down the middle. Clark Kent on one side, Bruce Wayne on the other. If Gunn is looking to poke fun at DC’s overly serious past, this is the guy to do it with.
5. Lor-Zod (aka Chris Kent)

Chris Kent isn’t just Superman’s foster son. He’s also the biological son of General Zod and Ursa. Born in the Phantom Zone and raised by Kal-El and Lois, he’s got the powers of Superman and a whole lot of emotional baggage. After sacrificing himself to trap Zod back in the Zone (Action Comics Annual #11), he returns later as the hero Nightwing (no, not the one you’re thinking of). If we need more family drama (that doesn’t involve Batman and his adopted orphans) in the DCU, this could actually work really great.
With Gunn’s DCU kicking off in full swing, don’t be surprised if your next favourite character is a radioactive cat or a conflicted Kryptonian monkey. Because in this new Superman universe, the weirder, the better.
