‘The Hunting Wives’ Gets ‘SNL’ Treatment With Amy Poehler And Aubrey Plaza Serving Guns Glamour And Gay Panic In The Best Sketch Of 2025

This weekend, Amy Poehler made her first return to Saturday Night Live as a host in over 10 years, and, just to be clear, she was not here to play. Poehler was the star of a pre-taped sketch on the episode called “The Hunting Wives Season 2 Trailer,” and truthfully? This may be the single best thing SNL has done since Domingo.
The sketch begins with a narrator voiceover “Millions of Americans tuned in for season one of The Hunting Wives, the straight-but-lesbian, horny Republican murder drama.” Chloe Fineman then appears as Sophie O’Neil, who announces that she is “back from prison,” and Amy Poehler, dressed in a deep-V green dress and a wig that was trying not to flop off, looks up from her seat and just says, “Well, look what the cat dragged in.” The narrator then says that “Thighs will be squeezed. Guns will be drawn.” Que the we get some fake reviews flashing on-screen. I have been mulling them over all weekend and my favorite is still “It’s like Call Me By Your Name for women who shop at Bass Pro Shop.”
How could it get even BETTER you might ask?! Well Aubrey Plaza comes in. Sunglasses on, voice so deadpan you can hear the madness radiating from her body. “Hey, ladies. I’m new here,” she says. “I just moved from California.” Aubrey is immediately offered a seat by Amy “We’re just making mimosas. Pull up a chair.” “Oh, I’ve never made mimosas before,” Aubrey says. Chloe, hovering behind her with that hair just way too close to Aubrey’s face, laughs and says, “I’ll show you.”
In comes the low-key brunch montage, all in slow-motion, hair blowing, champagne pouring, every actress so primed for a mimosas commercial that they might as well be in Chanel perfume ad for bisexual panic. Of course Chloe asks about her California beau Aubrey left behind, and casually dropped “I don’t have a boyfriend. I have a girlfriend,” The room freezes, screams “Lesbian? !”, and everyone immediately pulls a gun. You could not make this stuff up. And then the narrator swoops in at the end to cap it all with, “The Hunting Wives Season Two. Don’t watch it on a plane.”
Oh and the real Hunting Wives cast, Malin Akerman, Katie Lowes, Jamie Ray Newman? They all watched the trailer together and it was absolute chaos. “HUNTING WIVES ON SNL! We were DYING,” Lowes captioned it. Akerman calls it “the best thing I’ve ever seen!! !” And Brittany Snow, being Brittany Snow, just commented, “It’s just us and the beans, baby.”
This whole thing was pure perfection. Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, bad wigs, brunch guns, fake reviews, the whole package, everything you want in a Southern lesbian thriller that does not exist. (YET!)
