HBO Unveiled Their First Trailer For ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ At New York City Comic Con

By

It’s an exciting time to be a Westerosi. HBO just dropped the first trailer for its Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms at the brand’s New York Comic Con panel. Coming to HBO and Max in January 2026, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, just as he’s becoming his squire. Egg is still many years away from revealing his Targaryen heritage that will one day upend the known world.

The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight, which was published in 1998 and kicks off the author’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. In it, Martin returns to a simpler, but no less interesting era in Westeros roughly 90 years before Ned Stark was King in Winterfell. The new trailer touches on Dunk’s less-than-grand beginnings as a roaming hedge knight, his meeting and friendship with Egg, and both of their destinies at the Ashford Meadow tourney, where the houses of Westeros’ great and small gather, loyalties are tested, and the Targaryens always have the last word.

The most exciting part of the trailer was the return of the House of Tyrell, who have not been seen since the War of the Five Kings in Game of Thrones Season 7. Steve Wall has been cast as Lord Leo “Longthorn” Tyrell, the legendary knight who has also seen action in the First Blackfyre Rebellion. In the trailer, Longthorn flexes his many tourney victories in the Ashford lists and brags to his fellow knights about just how easily he will dispatch of Dunk. While House Tyrell’s return will be missed by many, there’s one more exciting tidbit about the prequel series.

Martin spoke with the press earlier this year, saying he has watched season one, which is already in production, and it’s “great”. The author also says the characters are “unusual” in that they don’t fit the typical fantasy roles. Martin points out that while Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are wars and dragon-size spectacles, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is softer and more comedic. It is a more personal story about friendship, knights, and honor. “I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change,” he said. Martin’s also working on the second season, which could become HBO’s next big Westerosian event if the show finds its footing. If so, it could also keep George R.R. Martin busy while fans continue to wait patiently for The Winds of Winter.
