What True Love Feels Like After You’ve Lost It

True love ultimately wants what’s best for the other, even when it can’t be you.

True love is never forgotten. Time may fade memories and bring healing to a broken heart, but that person is never erased from your mind, their presence is never entirely forgotten. Their love will always be missed. You will remember them in the most mundane tasks, as you will throughout the highlights of your life.

True love leaves a permanent scar that will never fully fade. It will change you intrinsically and become a part of you eternally. You will feel its sting from time to time, no matter how many years have passed. Their impact will mould you into the person you will become, while part of their character will meld into your being.

True love leaves no room for hate. Pain, loneliness, and suffering- yes, but not hate. When you love someone with everything you possess in your heart-regardless of the pain- love and hate cannot co-exist. A part of you will always be in love with them, even after you have bestowed your heart to another lover.

True love will reminisce. It will romanticize your relationship and relish on the good times. It will discard the flaws and diminish the fractures along the way that led to its ultimate demise. The blissful memories will be the ones stored closest to your heart. They will be re-told in comical stories and re-lived in casual conversations. Comfort and peace will find permanency in the nostalgia of your love.

True love will always care. Even after the other has found a new companion, even after extreme pain has been inflicted-true love will wish nothing but the best. True love ultimately wants what’s best for the other, even when it can’t be you. Because true love prioritizes the other’s happiness despite knowing that you can no longer provide them with that.

True love is understanding that everything has its time and place and just because it didn’t last forever doesn’t make it any less real. However, true love allows you to move on with your own life, pursue your own happiness, and find your own love, because that person will always be in your heart. True love is full of gratitude for the impact that person left behind on your life, the ways they moulded you into a better individual, and most importantly, the love they enabled you to feel in ways you never knew possible before them.

No matter the heartbreak, the pain, the loneliness, and the loss of a true love- that love has opened your heart to the rawest, most radical and revolutionary feeling we can experience as humans. And that is something to truly be grateful for. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
