10 Things You Learn From Being A Girlfriend

One of the most wonderful things in life is having someone to share bits and pieces of your life with. Being in a relationship takes you to new heights but let’s admit it it’s not a walk in the park to be in one no matter how many years you’ve already been dating. I’m not a relationship expert but here are some of the things I learned so far on being a girlfriend.

1. If you can, avoid expectations.

This may sound cliché but really the worst way to hurt yourself is by expecting and you know what sucks about it? When what you hope for doesn’t happen. Let it all just flow freely. Just because you are already in a relationship with that person doesn’t mean he has to do whatever you want him to do for you. Let things go smoothly.

2. Be honest.

Sometimes honesty hurts the one you love but you owe them the truth. It may hurt for a while but lies can hurt far longer and leave deeper wounds. But not all truths are bad, sometimes it makes them feel better so go ahead tell them how you feel when they do something special for you, a compliment or two wouldn’t hurt.

3. Never let a day go by without telling him you love him.

A simple text, phone call or e-mail goes a long way. Sometimes all it takes to lift him up and brighten his day is a message from you. But please know that flooding him with texts and calling him nonstop unless it’s an emergency is going way overboard.

4. Never get overly attached.

Remember the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme on 9gag? That is not the mental picture you want your boyfriend to have when he sees your 20 missed calls in a span of three hours. Sometimes guys need space from us, to think/ do things for and by himself, play videogames with his buddies or whatever just give it to him when he asks a time off for himself. And besides it kind of helps when you let each other grow outside the boundaries of your relationship.

5. Always be there for each other.

Sometimes when they are down they may act like they don’t need you but really they need to be comforted. Whether it’s their favorite food, funny photos you found online to brighten up his mood, singing him a song from his favorite TV series or just letting him know you are there for him when he needs you is more than enough. Presence is a major factor that should never be overlooked in a relationship.

6. Never let any fight or issue go unresolved.

Fix anything right away. The longer you let it lie there without doing anything about it the more it would take for you to fix it. Of course it would take the two of you to fix it, never blame each other but if you know you’re wrong apologizing and admitting you’re wrong always helps. At the end of the day no matter how much you fight and argue you’d still stay together if you never give up on each other.

7. Love him for who he is.

Don’t change him just because you think he would suit you better if you alter some of his qualities. Remember this is the person you fell in love with in the first place, if you changed some of his parts he would turn out to be someone completely different and you might end up with a complete stranger.

8. Always make the best out of every relationship.

There’s no such thing as FOREVER but why should that stop you from doing the best you can to keep this person in your life? Yes, there is nothing permanent in this world but it sure must feel good looking back at the good memories you shared together and remembering that however hard it is you still managed to give all your best for this person.

9. Always leave him wanting more.

Let’s admit it; men tend to have a taste for the chase. A little bit of mystery always leaves him in awe.

10. Be his friend.

It’s your job to be his girlfriend but the word “friend” is also attached to it so do everything it takes to live up to that word. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
