5 Studio Ghibli Movies That Actually Live Up To The Hype

By

People love Studio Ghibli movies. They talk about them like they’re perfect, beautiful, touching, and impossible to criticize. If you’ve never watched one and have heard all the praise, you might wonder if it’s just hype. But the truth is, some of these movies are just that good.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, magic, or just a fun story, these movies have something for everyone. They’re not just pretty pictures or nostalgia trips; they’re strange, funny, sad, and unforgettable in ways other studios rarely pull off. If you’ve never seen a Ghibli movie or want to watch the best ones again, here are five that are definitely worth the hype.

5. The Boy and the Heron

Toho

This is Hayao Miyazaki’s, the co-founder and director of Studio Ghibli’s newest movie. The story follows a boy named Mahito who relocates to the countryside after losing his mother in a fire. There, he meets a talking heron who leads him into a weird tower and a world full of strange birds and creatures. The other world is beautiful but also dangerous. Some people say the movie is about Miyazaki’s own life. However, it’s a strange, personal story that feels like a dream you can’t quite remember when you wake up.

4. Grave of the Fireflies

Toho

This movie is completely different from other Ghibli films. It’s about a teenage boy named Seita and his little sister Setsuko trying to survive during World War II in Japan. After bombs destroy their city and kill their mother, they are forced to live with their aunt who doesn’t want them around. Eventually, they end up alone, living in a cave and struggling to survive. Seita does his best to care for his sister, but things go from bad to worse. The movie shows how terrible war is, especially for kids who didn’t choose to be part of it.

3. My Neighbor Totoro

Toho

People call this movie “cute,” but it’s pretty strange when you think about it. Two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, move to the country with their dad to be closer to their mom, who’s sick and in the hospital. While exploring their new home, little Mei finds a huge, furry creature called Totoro living in the forest. Soon, the sisters are riding in a bus that’s a giant cat, making trees grow with a magical dance and flying through the air. Not much happens in terms of plot, but that’s okay. Totoro himself is one of the most lovable characters ever made.

2. Porco Rosso

Toho

This movie doesn’t get talked about as much as it should. It’s about a pilot named Porco who’s been cursed to look like a pig. After World War I, he decides to live by the sea, flying his red airplane and catching sky pirates for money. When an American pilot shoots down his plane, Porco goes to get it fixed with help from Fio, a young and talented engineer. The story is funny and sad at the same time. It’s a movie about getting older and dealing with the past, but it’s also about cool airplanes and adventure.

1. Spirited Away

Toho

This is the Ghibli movie most people know, and there’s a good reason for that. 10-year-old Chihiro gets stuck in a strange world full of spirits after her parents turn into pigs. She has to work at a magical bathhouse run by a witch named Yubaba to save them and find her way home. The movie is full of weird and wonderful characters, such as the masked spirit No-Face and Haku, a river spirit. Everything feels alive, from the soot sprites to the train that floats over flooded tracks. It’s a surreal coming-of-age story, and the hand-drawn animation still looks better than most modern films.
