Science Says If You Aren’t Having Sex This Often, Your Relationship Might Be In Peril

There’s nothing better than some sexy time with your partner. But how often should you be having sex? A study suggests that there might actually be a clear-cut answer here.

Popular culture would suggest that more sex = more happiness. But science suggests this might not be the case.

The 40-year study followed 30,000 Americans throughout the course of their various relationships. What the survey discovered, is that couples who have sex once a week are typically the happiest couples.

“Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week,” according to lead researcher Amy Muise.

Some previous studies have suggested that more sex leads to more happiness, but this study is the most comprehensive, looking at data from 11,285 men and 14,225 women.

This study’s findings only apply to those in committed relationships. Science has not yet been able to establish a quantifiable link between how much sex a single person has, and their happiness.

While many common stereotypes suggest that men would want to have MUCH more sex than women — and certainly more than just once a week, this study’s findings were consistent across all genders.

“Our findings were consistent for men and women, younger and older people, and couples who had been married for a few years or decades,” Muise said.

The study also discovered that sex might be a bigger factor in happiness than money:

Sex may be more strongly associated with happiness than is money. The researchers also conducted an online survey with 335 people (138 men, 197 women) who were in long-term relationships and found similar results as the first study. These participants were also asked about their annual income, and there was a larger difference in happiness between people who had sex less than once a month compared to people who had sex once a week than between people who had an income of $15,000-$25,000 compared to people who had an income of $50,000-$75,000 per year. So folks, make sure you are getting it on about once a week — otherwise that’s about $50,000 worth of unhappiness you are billing your partner. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
