Ben Affleck And Matt Damon’s Forgotten Classic ‘Dogma’ Is Returning To Theaters
One of the many reasons movie fans love collecting blu-rays is that some movies disappear from streaming and are basically impossible to find. Kevin’s Smith’s 1999 fantasy comedy Dogma is one of these movies. For years the only way to watch the film was spending big money on a rare and highly sought after DVD copy. Now, the cult classic is getting a theatrical rerelease.
Dogma follows Affleck (as Bartleby) and Damon (as Loki) as two fallen angels plotting to return to heaven by attending the grand rededication of a Catholic church, during which the cardinal promises attendees will be forgiven of all sins. As this would threaten God’s infallibility, a human named Bethany is tasked with stopping Bartleby and Loki from fulfilling their goal. The plot made Dogma controversial as some Catholics consider it blasphemous.

The movie became a cult classic due to its irreverent humor and star-studded cast. In addition to Affleck and Damon, Dogma also features Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Janeane Garofalo, Alanis Morissette and of course Jason Mewes and writer/director Kevin Smith as the iconic duo Jay and Silent Bob.
Dogma is returning to theaters on June 5, honoring the 25 years since its original release. Starting in April, Kevin Smith will also be touring 25 cities to do a Q&A at select screenings. One of those tour stops will be a 4/20 Easter Sunday screening at The Grove in Los Angeles.
Bless me, Father — for I have cinema! God bless iconic events for granting my fourth (and perhaps best) film a religious re-release! Praise the Lord and pass the popcorn for the second coming of ‘Dogma’!
