"He's staring right at me."

March is Women’s History Month and for us there’s no better way to celebrate than watching horror movies made by women. Over at Creepy Catalog, we exhaustively chronicled over 100 horror movies directed by women. The #1 movie on that list is now streaming on Netflix.

Watcher (2022) is a psychological horror movie about Julia (Maika Monroe), who moves to Bucharest with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend is busy with his job, but Julia doesn’t know the language and doesn’t have much to do but wander the streets and hang out in their apartment. She notices a neighbor in the building across the street watching her, but her boyfriend doesn’t believe her. At the same time, a serial killer nicknamed “the Spider” is loose in the city.

Written and directed by Chloe Okuno in her first feature film, Watcher is beautiful to watch, suspenseful and has a total barn burner of a finale. You might recognize Chloe Okuno from her very scary segment in the V/H/S/94 (2021) anthologyStorm Drain. It follows a local news reporter into a storm drain as she discovers Raatma, a hideous giant rat/supernatural cult leader. This is one of the best entries in the entire V/H/S franchise.

If you liked Watcher, Okuno’s next project is Brides, another horror movie starring Maika Monroe. The official synopsis reads: “Set in 1960s Italy, a married couple visits a remote villa owned by a mysterious count. The count takes an interest in the wife, but her feminist ideals disrupt his Eden of vampire brides.” Brides will be distributed by Neon and is currently in production.

Watcher is now streaming on Netflix.
