Tubi’s Most Controversial Horror Movie
Should you invite a date over and pop in Megan is Missing? Not under any circumstances.
Tubi is a free streaming service that is home to thousands of movies. It’s a great place to look for hidden gems and new movies are added weekly. Tubi is an especially great place for horror fans and their catalog currently includes one of the most controversial horror movies ever made, Megan is Missing.
First, what is Megan is Missing all about? Megan is Missing is a found footage psychological horror movie about two teenage best friends: Megan (Rachel Quinn) and Amy (Amber Perkins). Megan meets a guy online and disappears after going to meet up with him. Searching for her friend, Amy confronts the man and also goes missing. The movie is not very scary until the last five minutes.
What makes Megan is Missing controversial? The last five minutes of the film show what happened to Megan and Amy after they disappeared. The man the girls met online is a violent predator who assaults and tortures the girls. In addition to explicit images, the final scene is also upsetting to watch as Amy is told to climb inside a plastic barrel which contains the body of her best friend. The movie is banned in New Zealand and many horror fans feel it goes too far.

In response to criticism that Megan is Missing is exploitative, writer/director Michael Goi said it is supposed to be a strong warning to parents about the danger of letting their children talk to strangers online. He was inspired by real life cases of child abduction and asked that the actresses’ parents be on set during filming. When Megan is Missing went viral on TikTok in 2020, Goi made the following warning to potential viewers:
Do not watch the movie in the middle of the night. Do not watch the movie alone. And if you see the words ‘photo number one’ pop up on your screen, you have about four seconds to shut off the movie if you’re already kind of freaking out before you start seeing things that maybe you don’t want to see.
So, is Megan is Missing worth watching? It depends. The final segment of Megan is Missing is beyond graphic. If you’ve ever been disturbed by depictions of sexual violence in media, this film will be too much for you. If you’re a “nothing bothers me” horror fan then sure, you will enjoy this movie. Should you invite a date over and pop in Megan is Missing? Not under any circumstances.
