Rumpelstiltskin and In the Lost Lands are just two of the eight horror movies released today!

Surprise! 8 New Horror Movies Started Streaming Today (April 8)

By

It looks like April is going to be another big month for new horror!

Just today, eight brand-new horror movies hit streaming services. The lineup includes dark fantasy films, fairy tale horror, monster movies, demonic possessions, gory action, and a serial killer biopic.

If you want to keep up with the best horror released in 2025, take a look at my ranking of every single newly released horror film I’ve watched (and I’m trying to watch them all) over on Creepy Catalog. I’m up to 62 movies as of this writing. And for more new horror from the past twelve months, keep checking my New & Upcoming Horror Movies Tracker. For now though, here are trailers and descriptions for the eight movies released today.

Ed Kemper

Ed Kemper was co-written by Stephen Johnston who also wrote other movies inspired by real killers, including Ed Gein (2000), The Hillside Strangler (2004), Starkweather (2004), and Ted Bundy (2002).

For viewers who enjoy: true crime adaptations, serial killer thrillers

Ed Kemper is a biopic of the serial killer sometimes referred to as the “Co-ed Killer.” In 1973, Kemper was convicted of murdering eight women, and his crimes often involved corpse mutilation and necrophilia. This narrative film juxtaposes his horrific acts along with his upbringing in an abusive environment.

Red Night at Skye’s

Horror icon Bill Moseley is in the cast of Red Night at Skye’s.

For viewers who enjoy: crime capers, gory violence

Family man and veteran Cole Boyd needs money. Fast. So he reluctantly agrees to take part in the robbery of a pawn shop which is actually a front for a meth-making gang. Skye’s Pawn Shop has more secrets than just meth though, and Boyd’s evening plans change from a robbery into a blood-drenched fight for survival.

Gates of Flesh

One of the stars of Gates of Flesh, Rae Olivier, previously appeared in V/H/S/99 (2022) and The Walking Dead (in the episode “The World Before” from season 10).

For viewers who enjoy: demonic zombies, survival horror

A city is overrun by a wave of demonic possession that turns people into a conscious-yet-zombie-like state (sort of like Deadites from the Evil Dead franchise). A group of friends seek shelter in an abandoned church, but one among them is already possessed. Can they escape before they are all taken?

Desert Fiends

The cast list for Desert Fiends has many faces familiar to low-budget horror fans, including Scout Taylor-Compton, Eric Roberts, Bai Ling, Michael Paré, and more.

For viewers who enjoy: desert movies, horror comedies

The trailer for Desert Fiends looks like Burning Man meets The Hills Have Eyes. The story is about friends breaking down on their way to a concert in the desert, then they’re hunted by a family of deranged desert-dwelling killers. The Indiegogo campaign describes the movie as a “horror comedy slasher film,” and the trailer does look pretty silly. It also looks like fun.

In the Lost Lands

In the Lost Lands was inspired by the 1982 short story of the same name by George R. R. Martin. The movie was released in theaters in March.

For viewers who enjoy: apocalyptic fantasy, action horror, Paul W.S. Anderson movies

In the Lost Lands is portrayed as an action-horror epic, though how epic it really feels might depend on the viewer. Set in a dystopian, apocalyptic future where magic and monsters exist, a witch named Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) enlists the aid of a guide, Boyce (Dave Bautista), to help her travel into the dangerous Lost Lands to find a werewolf. The movie’s aesthetic feels like a fantasy-horror movie straight out of the late-90s or early 2000s, complete with melodramatic moments and cheesy CGI. It’s actually kind of fun.

Rumpelstiltskin

“Rumpelstiltskin” has been adapted into a horror movie before, most notably in 1995 in the cheesy, low-budget Rumpelstiltskin by director Mark Jones.

For viewers who enjoy: fairy tale horror movies, dark fantasy

Unlike some other modern retellings of fairy tales like Cinderella’s Revenge (2024) or Alice in Terrorland (2023), this adaptation of “Rumpelstiltskin” appears to stick mostly to its roots. It tells the story of a miller’s daughter who is ordered by a king to spin straw into gold, or else she will be executed. A grotesque imp appears in the young woman’s time of need, and you probably already know the rest. As a dark (well, darker) version of the fairy tale, Rumpelstiltskin looks interesting.

The Cursed Tapes

Visually, the trailer for The Cursed Tapes is reminiscent of The Boogeyman (2023) with its long-fingered monster and a kid walking around in the dark with a ball light.

For viewers who enjoy: monsters, creepy supernatural horror

While Clint (Donny Boaz) is going through his late father’s belongings for an estate sale, he discovers a box of VHS tapes. As he watches the disturbing tapes, Clint is able to piece together the monstrous secret his father was concealing. The trailer for The Cursed Tapes gives the impression that it might be part anthology horror, and part Boogeyman-inspired monster movie.

iPossessed

Carl Rimi stars in iPossessed as Tad Volo. He also co-wrote and co-directed the movie.

For viewers who enjoy: demonic possession, psychological horror

A demon infiltrates the housewarming party held by a group of friends. They are forced to agree to stay together through the night or else one of them will lose their soul. As the night progresses, the demon attempts to turn friend against friend, causing distrust and fear to take them over.
